Groo the Wanderer
My head is spinning. Lately, I have been collecting recordings of the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet, trying to find the best one for my classes. I have noticed that almost all of them differ in the wording of the Creed. Not in a major way, but it is enough to bother me and started me wondering: What exactly IS the correct wording of the Apostle's Creed in English? I have heard the following with the variations in parenthesis: I believe in God the Father (the Almighty) (Almighty), Maker of Heaven and earth. (And) (I believe) in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, our Lord. (Who)(He) was conceived by (the power of) the Holy Spirit(,) (And) born of the Virgin Mary(,) (.) (He) suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended (into hell) (to the dead). (and) on the third day, He rose again (from the dead). He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father (Almighty) (the Almighty). (From thence) He shall come (forth) (again) to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and (the) life everlasting. Amen. HELP! I wanna know which is the legitimate wording....or am I worrying too much about this?
Pio Nono
JMJ 3/23 - St. Turibio de Mongrovejo Groo the Wanderer, The official English translation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church has it this way:
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He sufferd under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. (CCC pp. 49-50)
Hope this helps. Yours, Pio Nono
