"Did you ever visit any of the other Carmels in the CCA, (besides Reno and Saranac)"

I visited the chapel at Elysburg once. And also attended Sunday Mass at Baltimore Carmel once- insipid liturgical dance there among other things I find unappealing and untrue to St Teresa's vision of Carmelite life. But they are getting vocations.... I think they have 4 or 5 in formation now.

Agreed.

The Carmels truly living the way of life St. Teresa intended for them would be those under the 1990s, and traditional ones under the 1991s. Those in the St. Joseph's Association are under either, and are all very good. Their webiste I just noticed was recently updated - http://carmelitenunsstjoseph.org/

Also, I just noticed on the Cloistered Life site, there's an article on "a day within the walls" of the Iron Mountain Carmel :j - http://cloisteredlife.com/carmelites.htm

IMHO, I think that the Association of Mary Queen of Carmel OCD monasteries in the US have done a great job with renewing without going "over the edge: All wear full or slightly modified habits.

It is interesting to note that some of the monasteries that used to be in the St Joseph Association have not moved over to the Mary Queen of Carmel group. I think maybe Terre Haute and Alhambra are examples but I am not positive on that. Covington LA Carmel is thriving with new vocations and has recovered from Katrina's extensive damage to their lovely chapel. They are also a lovely homey community and their chaplains are Benedictines so their liturgy resources are excellent.

Just my 2 cents.

Hey, I just found on this blog a couple pictures of the new Carmelite monastery in Denmark, WI (article on it) One of my friends visited there and gave me a brochure which I scanned for my photo page. I'll have to add these pictures too. ^_^
Believe it or not, Buffalo wasn't a spooky Carmel to me. I found the Shrine of St Therese very inviting and the extern sisters were SOOO welcoming. And I would visit their chapel to pray often when I was in grad school in Buffalo. I still feel some nostalgia for it at times, but I don't think that that's where God is leading me. But Dallas- that was a spooky Carmel!

I went to a solemn profession at Buffalo- two nuns were making solemn vows and the music was indeed beautiful. You could not see a thing, of course, with the grilles and the nun's choir being at a 90-degree angle to the public church. I have been to one other Discalced Carmelite solemn profession in a community that is part of the St Joseph Association and is quite careful about enclosure, wears the full habits, etc but I think took the 1991 Constitutions. So they did avail themselves of the opportunity for the prioress, novice mistress and the nun making profession to come into the sanctuary for the vows and the veilling part of the Mass, so every one could see. Actually, there is (or used to be) a provision in the official rites that allowed this in cloistered communities- as a means to edify the faithful and encourage vocations.
God is good... and sneaky! :P

I was going to come and ask about the Carmelite order and the first thread I spotted here was this. Then I was going to pick your brains to see what you knew about the Carmel in Dallas. And there was the reference! Weird.

Okay... so explain what you mean by "spooky Carmel", if you please. Also, does anyone know anything about the Arlington, TX Carmel? What about the one in Sioux City, IA?

Don't know about spooky but my Mom--third order- loves the Arlington Carmel. She used to visit Mother Mary Angel and still writes Mother Angel Theresa for prayers. I think they are in the Queen of Carmel Association.

Hey hughey! I recently visited the Carmel in Dallas, the one on 600 Flowers Ave, and have a friend there :) They are wonderful!! I love them very much! Their novitiate has really been growing in recent years. I believe there are 7 novices now. I really loved their spirit and enjoyed speaking with the Novice Mistress very much!

They recently renovated their chapel, and it is so incredibly beautiful!! Check out this thread here for some pictures and references to them in a few posts. There's a High & Low TLM there every Sunday, for the Mater Dei Community, http://dallas.traditionalmass.net

In the 90's they offered their chapel to the Mater Dei community for the TLM, and the former bishop of Dallas approved, only that the sisters could not participate. So thus is why they've always had an earlier ordinary Mass on Sundays, and they do not receive Holy Communion at the TLMs (it seems likely that may change now though, since the MP) But I know for sure several of the them are present, if not all of them, for the 9:30 High Mass every Sunday (contrary actually to what it says on the Mater Dei site, that normally they are not present), and that they really love the TLM. And they are very close to the wonderful Mater Dei community. For instance, they told me for Halloween the children in the Mater Dei community all dressed up as saints and met with the sisters in the palor. And the sisters had to guess which saint they were. They told me the only one they didn't get was St. Zita :)

I went there for my friend's clothing ceremony actually last November, and Fr. Terra, FSSP offered a TLM for the occasion, which was beautiful! It's definitely worth a trip there just to see the place, and the wonderful work they've just completed with the chapel and grounds. I found them extremely welcoming and joyful. Also, as you might have noticed in my thread in Open Mic (First Friday Vigils at Dallas Carmel), every First Friday until the Presidential Election in November they are having all-night adoration vigils for the pro-life cause.

If you have any other questions about them, feel free to PM me! God bless!

In this thread I started on the 1990 & 1991 Constitutions, I explained a little about the different associations in the first post. I have to post again in that thread actually to correct something in the last post. The Discalced Carmelite Friars nearby (Mount Carmel Center) actually aren't their chaplains, they have a diocesan priest as one, but are their confessors.

Also my friend at Dallas Carmel told me that before she entered, she ran into this thread on the Constitutions and was pretty sure it was me :j So I was telling her and the Novice Mistress a little about phatmass, and how it's based in Dallas and everything :)
