It has nothing to do with "republican" or "democrate" but as there are talk show hosts on both sides that are no different then Imus.

In the case of the basketball team, Imas's comments were in regards to them having mass amounts of tattoos and having a "tough/thug" appearance, so it was something that they could have changed.
