Don John of Austria Posted January 29, 2004 Posted January 29, 2004 I am reading a book on quantum physics and cosmology-- it is really interesting but sometimes it hurts my head particularly when they start talking about time existing all at once forever. The thing is as I read it I can't help butthink it is really close to the chritoplatonic Philosophies of Augustine and the Idea of being in the Mind of God. It is very strange.
BLAZEr Posted January 29, 2004 Posted January 29, 2004 You're reading Dorian Gray........ on PURPOSE?!!? What are you talking about? It's amesome. I haven't enjoyed a book this much since I re-read Brideshead revisted this last summer.
BLAZEr Posted January 29, 2004 Posted January 29, 2004 Oscar Wilde is quite an interesting reading selection You do know that Oscar Wilde died a repenant Catholic. He had a priest come hours before his death and hear his last confession. This death bed conversion (which are my favorite types of conversions) led to the eventual non-death bed (read: boring) conversion of his lover. Oscar Wilde is truly a genius. He has a knack for pointing out all the vices in "acceptable" society and overlooking all the vices among the more vulgar crowds. He's my kind of writer.
hyperdulia again Posted January 29, 2004 Posted January 29, 2004 I love oscar wilde...the picture of dorian grey is his best work... well that and the work he did for young lord douglas

Yes, Oscar Wilde also died with a glass of champagne in one hand, and his last words.. "Either the wallpaper in this room goes, or I do."
VeraMaria Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 I'm reading "Mother Cabrini: Immigrant Saint" (amesome book about the saint !) and Night by Elie Wiesel (about the Holocaust....but I prefer not to read it before going to bed...it haunts me  ) Oedipus Rex (we have to read it for our English class....man, that guy is messed up! (he's both husband and son to Iocaste! )) Mara, daughter of the Nile (amesome!!!! I'm very very very much into historical novels, and this one set in Ancient Egypt is amesome!!!) yeah, i read like 4 at a time
hyperdulia again Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 i really don't knbowhow *repentat* Oscar died...he died a Catholic...but I just somehow doubt prison and Victorianism made anyone *repentent*
BLAZEr Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 Look, let me live in my little fantasy land of death bed conversion. Either way, he made a confession, and I'm pretty sure when he got to see Jesus he recognized him and had all the repentance he needed to get into il Purgatorio.
immaculata Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 I dunno.. Dorian Gray just left a bad taste in my mouth with the way Wilde treated Catholicism Fascinating storyline, though!
hyperdulia again Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 i think he's in heaven/purgatory...i even have a private devotion to him..he's on my altar and has a read candle...:o

He's my kind of writer. no that post was totally for you pal, i read the book already and it was ok, but that is expected from my 'liberal tendencies.' and as the suspected resident liberal of pmass I commend your choice of reading oh and the crappy "he died a repentant Catholic" justification defense doesn't work buddy because he was doped up on opium and in all sorts of premiscuos relationships when he wrote that book. aren't your kind more likely to support covering up vices, sweeping things uder the rug?
hyperdulia again Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 he was in three relationships when he wrote that book Bosy, poor Mrs. Wilde, and Winston Churchill's father-in-law.

First of all. He died having had confession. Many people with much more research than I, will lay claim to Oscar Wilde as a Catholic. I like Hyper's little red candle idea, but not for Oscar Wilde . . . I have a better one in mind. (By the way, if it's a private devtion, why are you telling us Hyper???) Oh, and M.Sigga I've got more surprises than book choices up my sleeve. Don't forget, I'm a republican, but I'm a Catholic first. A real one, not a protestant one. And just like you can pull the lever for Bobby Jindal, I can secretly indulge in the vices of, ahem, "others" . . . never my own vices, I AM a REPUBLICAN after all . . .
traichuoi Posted January 30, 2004 Author Posted January 30, 2004 I'm reading the Picture of Dorian Gray. It's a book I've pretended to have read for years, and am finally getting around to it. hmmm...i'm thinking if you like it i might have to pick this up...
hyperdulia again Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 I also have a private devotion to the Last Romanov Rulers of Russia, dozens of Eastern Orthodox Saints, and Our Lady of Medjugorje...Private does not mean private...as in not to be spoken of...it means private as in not Church approved...Fatima was a private Devotion until the Church said otherwise...I'm telling for the same reason that whenever Nicky and Alex are mentioned I mention my devotion to them. No one has to like my red candle for Mr Wilde, I really don't care if anyone likes it. His prayers have profitted me greatly and beg I beg him for more. Selah!
