I had no idea........ these forums can be SO confusing.

Well, from what I understand the priests vary on strictness about it. I was allowed back there to clean and use an iron to get the wax up off of the floor (has anyone seen the beeswax candles the eastern rite uses? no? ok... here is a picture:

Yeah, I like that. I think it is best to maintain the holy of holies thing in churches so I believe I would be uncomfortable going behind the iconostasis. I feel uncomfortable going up near the altar in Roman churches too. Not that I think I'm unclean or unworthy because I'm not ordained, but because I respect the symbolism and theological meaning of maintaining a mystique about it. We're talking about the altar of God after all.. It is more reverent anyway. Going up there to clean seems a different matter of course. :)
Sounds like there was a lack of active participation. IMHO, Archbishop Fulton Sheens little book "The Mass and Calvary" is a good way to increase one's appreciation of the Forma Extraordinaria. The theological and spiritual richness of this Liturgy cannot be overstated. I've heard of people who say that Rosary is boring etc. but when one enters deeply into the mysteries of the Holy Rosary and interiorly communes with Christ through Our Lady it is a great spiritual joy. I think full participation in the Forma Extraordinaria can be compared to this one some level (although it is a partial analogy).
One can "get something" out of the Forma Ordinaria without a highly interiorized encounter with the essence of the Liturgy. I think that the Forma Extraordinaria requires a somewhat more contemplative and ascetical spirit to be fully appreciated. These are both things that are very needed in the American Church these days so I hope that the wider use of this Liturgy will encourage such things.
Yes, that is a great book! Also there is St. Peter Julian Eymard's, Holy Communion, Vol II of the Eymard Library - one of my absolute favorite books, and favorite saints of all time!

God bless you all,

This thread apparently caught on fire since I first looked at it several hours ago, and I'm glad I did not respond then because some statements really irritated me, and I may not have responded charitably.

Concerning the "fuss" over the Motu Proprio, there appears to be an indifference towards Catholic Tradition, as if tradition can be ignored. Tradition means to pass on, and it's significance derives from who is passing on to us. The proper way to perform the Mass was passed down to us through the Fathers, Doctors, and Saints of Holy Mother Church, and there can be no doubt that the Holy Spirit played a huge part in its formation over the centuries. How can I then say, that I prefer something other than the Mass of Ages, that nourished millions of Saints, that was established and hardened by some of the Greatest Doctors God has ever given the Church? It's absolutely unthinkable, and this is why the Traditional Latin Mass deserves our utmost reverence and respect.

For our friends who think of us as kneeling "zombies," I wonder whether they would describe the humble St Maria Faustyna Kowalska, who did not even have a fourth grade understanding of the Polish language, as a "zombie" kneeling at Mass she could not comprehend. Let me bold in saying, that this illiterate Saint "actively participated" in such mass more perfectly than you and I combined. The "active participation" so many Popes spoke about is not some external participation, it's an interior one. How can anyone go to a Latin Mass and not try participating in a form of worship where Calvary is made present to us? So often we excuse liturgical abuses by saying, "but Jesus is present, that's what's important!" why don't say the same for the Traditional Latin Mass?

Now friends, I know many of you are attached to the Novus Ordo Missae, and I hope my words did not offend you. The novus ordo missae said properly is a valid mass, no doubt about it, and I will never disparage a mass that is promulgated by the Magesterium, but allow me to be frank in my simplicity and admit that I do not understand how this order of mass can be considered equal to the Traditional Latin Mass. That is not to say they are not equal, I'm simply saying, I can't comprehend how they are equal, and that may be due to my simplicity.

I'm hoping somehwere above I explained why we "fuss" over the Motu proprio :)
