So I meet a dear friend on Phatmass a while back. He's leaving for the Seminary in about a month, and I want to give him a small gift. I'm wondering want I should get for him.

Your thought?

ps you know who you are.

What will he wear there? Maybe some collars or cuff links, or a fascia cincture?

Or a set of the Breviary? Or a nice Rosary?

THE SPIRITUAL LIFE : A TREATISE ON ASCETICAL AND MYSTICAL THEOLOGY by the Very Reverend Adolphe Tanquerey, S.S., D.D.

You can get it here for $32.00

You can get it here for around $9.00 in new condition. (This is a really good buy, so if your an ebay shopper... I say go for it.)

There is also a long list of other places you can get it for various priceshere. I put in my state so the taxes that are being added are my state taxes. You can put in another state though and it will figure out how much it will be taxes and all. I think the cheapest price started at $16.00 and the highest was around $55.00.

I cannot recommend this book enough. I think all priests and seminarians (all people really) should have a copy of this in their library. It is goes over everything related to the spiritual life. It was originally written for priests and seminarians. It is a really thick book and is well worth even $55.00.

If your still looking for something else then maybe a copy of The Imitation of Christ?

Who is his confirmation saint? You could get him something in connection with the saint. Prayer books also make lovely gifts, if chosen well.

Or go for something really practical:

A phone card so he can call home.

A gas card so he can go home for the holidays

A gift certificate to Walmart so he can pick up a few items he forgot to get before leaving.

Seminarians (at least in my case) have no problems collecting books over the years, but the really practical things make great gifts too.

peace...

I would definitly second this, give his a gift card for GAS! Where I live gas is 3.00 and the seminarians in our diocese have to travel to a few different parishes to give talks and well they don't have money. The gift of GAS is a great gift these days.

Also, cufflinks are always a good buy, I have a collection but if you want to get him cufflinks ask him to make sure he isn't anti-cufflink, I know some seminarians who are.

When someone very dear to me left for the seminary we gave him a journal.

It's now being filled with commentaries on the psalms :)

I have seminarian friends, this is a good idea.

Also, for future reference, seminarians visiting home seem to have huge demands on their time. I get to see my seminarian friends through bribery.

Hahaha! Yes, nothing better than a good bribe :D

It works with sisters too. "You know, I saw this be-eautiful rosary but I want to know what you think before I buy it... and there's a lovely little cafe right next to the shop!"

Actually worked TWICE with the same sister but I don't know if I can pull it off another time :)

By the way, if I see a particularly nice rosary or other devotional item that isn't so, well, feminine, I usually buy it - they make great gifts. (It's also fun to swap rosaries with someone who's going away for a longer period, and I don't think my male friends would appreciate light blue with white pearls :) )

I am anti-cufflinks. I just think time could be better spent with the ministry of the Church rather than someone looking good. Sorry that it was off topic but...my.02>

Gas is a great gift! Although I can't have a car! :weep: So, rosary swapping is cool, and so is just keeping intouch with a seminarian, or future sister. I think, for me anyway, keeping a line of communication open with friends is an awesome gift. Obviously s this forum thats not hard to keep up. But with secular friends, they grow away very quickly. I know that when itold my friends (secular) that i was leaving for the seminary, I didn't hear from half of them ever again. So communication is always good. And some spending money doesn't hurt either.

I second the keeping the line of communication open. When I was in the monastery I could receive letters (but not respond until Christmas). A few people stuck it out the whole year and wrote regularly and that meant the world to me. They were writing just for me, knowing that they wouldn't be getting anything in return. Just to hear what they've been up to, how their families are... it's one of the best gifts.
