I go to church on a college campus, so we are kind of lax on the dress code. Especially at the Sunday night mass, you see 90 precent of the people in jeans and/or sweats. I typically dress nicely for mass, dress pantaloons or khakis and a sweater, or a nice skirt or dress. But I like to dress up and it's a good reason for me to!! But, I don't think it's really important what you wear to mass, as long as you are there for the right reason. If your heart is there, it doesn't matter what you wear. On Ash WEdnesday, we have a home basketball game, so almost everyone will be dressed in jeans and kentucky blue for mass. But, that's all part of going to church on a college campus.

Thats the way all the Masses up at Fransiscan U. here in Steubenville is. I've even seen people come to Mass in their jammies! I don't like that at all. <_<

Where I went to college we had a strict dress code for Mass--girls had to be in a dress or skirt and guys had to wear a jacket and tie. Now, I don't think everyone should have to dress like that for Mass, necessarily, I know I didn't like it all that much when I was at school , but I'd rather be in that situation that see girls in their pajamas and pink furry slippers.

Mass is the one day of the week I tuck in my shirt.

We're supposed to wear clothes to Mass!? Wow, that explains all those funny looks!

Anyways, I usually dress semi-formal. But I have worn jeans and shorts. Especially during the summer, cause I worked at a scout camp. Mass was at 10:30 at night, after opening campfire, and we barely had time to make it, no time to change. So, we went in our uniform which, because it was summer, included scout shorts. While I think people should dress apropriately at Mass, I don't think we need to all be in suits and ties or full-length dresses. It's the heart more than the clothing that matters.

true willguy. but depending on the circumstances and the state in life you should attempt to dress the best you can.

1 - Black dress pantaloons and a sweater or buttoned shirt.

2 - A cassock & surplice.

3 - A suit.

Before I first went to Mass as an adult, I checked out the internet to find out what the "form" was. The article I read (can't remember where, sorry it was in my pre-Phatmass days) said dress as though you were going to a fine meal. I use that as a guide, although I do dress more casually on occasion.

I quite agree though, that clothes count for very little if the correct intention is not in the heart! :)

I don't wear suits, I own 1 set, but I don't think I can fit into it now.

Anyways, I wear my best baggy jeans and sweatshirt.

But really, who decides what is acceptable. To me the way I dress to mass is respectful because it's my best clothing, to others, wearing slacks and a tie is the way to go.

It depends on you. But I am sure we could all agree stuff that exposes breast or innapropriate t-shirts like Bud Weiser arn't really acceptable. But then again, like I said, who decides what is appropriate. I don't recall any Vatican documents that have any clarification on what to wear other than Vatican dress codes during the summer.

I only wore a suit once to mass, that was for baptism.... but I feel the way I dress normaly to mass is dressing up, I am not into suits, so dressing up is different to me. (In my parish barely one dresses up formal, but i see no difference to other parishes I have been to where everyone looks like penguins.)

Exactly.

I dress decently for mass. I try to wear a skirt (if I have one clean) or a nice pair of pantaloons. For example, last Sunday I wore a long black skirt, black turtle neck and a long gray sweater unbuttoned over top.

It bugs me when girls wear really revealing clothing to Mass.

i always dress my best for mass...ALWAYS. it's all because of my mom...she never let us wear normal clothes to mass when we were growing up.

so now i wear what i won't normally wear to hang out or normal day to day stuff...i wear something extra-ordinary...

i attend a teen mass on sat nights, and while i am dressed appropriatly... its a teen mass, and of course, theres bound to be teens. It is sad to see that many kids wearing things my mother would approve of let alone to wear it to church. just because we are at t teen mass, doesnt mean we have to act like teens, or act like teens today act. i think that there is a time and place for certain things and a time a place for certain things to def not be.

It bugs me when people wear their coats in church. We don't usually keep them on when we go to friends' houses, why wear them at church. If you get cold easily, buy warmer shirts!!

What's wrong with wearing your coat?

It can be really, really cold in the cathedral where I go to mass. Sometimes I have to wear my coat to keep from freezing. It's a lot easier to concentrate on mass when you aren't shivering like crazy.

Wow!

Whatever the weather in my Church, I'm sweating like crazy at the end of Mass. Choosing shirts that won't show sweat-patches under the arms is like a pre-Mass challenge to me!

an alb <g>...I'm duty MC one week in two. When I'm not serving, I go for smart casual, except on Sundays when we wear suit and tie. I think it makes a powerful reminder of the specialness of Sundays.
