A Questiuon About Women Veiling

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

If it's okay for women to be unveiled when in prayer why does St. Pul say:

But every woman praying or prophesying with her head not covered disgraceth her head: for it is all one as if she were shaven. For if a woman be not covered, let her be shorn. But if it be a shame to a woman to be shorn or made bald, let her cover her head. But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor the Church of God Now this I ordain: not praising you, that you come together, not for the better, but for the worse (( 1 Corinthians 11:1-17 )).

I've heard good reasons for why women should wear veils, but never why it's not necessary.

The questions I have is why did the Church in Canon Law not allow for women to wear veils, but ever since Vatican II it's now okay? Did the Church ever teach that not wearing a veil during church is a sin?

Also, I'd like to ask what is St Paul saying in 1 Corinthians 11:1-17 if it's not about women wearing veils when they pray?

Thank you in advance and God Bess.

Yep, and its actually the exact same thread as the one he started before- at the top of that one he wrote "I posted this same exact thing in the Q and A forum b/c I wanted an expert to get the answer, but I'd also like to hear everyone elses take"
... Phatcatholic was probably just going through cleaning out Q&A and didn't realize it.

At least when he brings it up its a unique question like this one was... its a legitimate and always relevant (for some of us) topic of discussion, you don't have to get involved in the discussions if you hate them so much :)

It's just a relevant question that is a bit confusing because of the practice of the church today, and people probably missed one of the relevant threads. Regardless of your stance on the issue, when one encounters that scriptural reference, or various practices of the church that have been abandoned for whatever reason, it's a confusing issue that one cannot answer oneself. A few women have asked me in person to answer this for them.

So read all the threads on it starting in 2004 and you will have no problem discussing it with them.

exactly what cmom said.

i still stand by my question of why bring it up again for the third time, even if one of the threads was originally in Q&A. (maybe it was this thread) and i ask that as a person who hates these kind of threads because of the pettiness on both sides that it invariably devolves to - not as a person who hates the topic.

Never said I did. I was just trying to demonstrate that many people find it a relevant topic, and don't go scouring the archives of this site, which has thousands of threads. many of which are of quality, and many are not.

Frankly, I'm grateful for the most recent thread prior to this one, as it changed my position on the subject. Aloysius and Apotheon convinced me that I was wrong.

Yes, it is a teaching of inspired Scripture and the Apostolic Tradition that a woman should wear a veil in Church.

I would like to add to Apotheon that it was not then intention of the Second Vatican Council that woman be unveiled during Mass.
