Innocent
This is all very funny, but what about people who get so depressed that they're on the verge of suicide and yet they refuse to see a therapist? (I've had some friends like that.) When someone you know is at that stage, you feel so helpless.
abercius24
This is what I like about phatmass. Person A makes a statement. Person B vigorously contests it. Person A responds back, defending his/her original position. Person B vigorously contests it. A huge debate breaks out, with people taking sides and emphasizing the strength of their particular point in the argument. Then, Person C, who has been a bit player in the entire exchange, comes out with a post about how everyone really agrees, if people would just listen to one another. Everyone hails the genius of Person C, whose wisdom is clear from this statement. There are a few funny comments made. Everyone laughs off the tension from earlier in the thread. Then, someone says, "This is all very funny, but what about (insert statement here)." And the whole cycle repeats.
And then when person D tries to disagree with person C in the following post, he/she is attacked by the overzealous lynch mob who are now satisfied with person C's genius, further justifying person C's victim mentality. Am I on the right track?

XIX
Yea mine was...kinda of effective, but not nearly as good as talking to friends to be honest. She was only really useful as a sounding board to me (even though it was obvious she knew what she was doing). It all depends on the patient and the therapist and the specific situation.l

The thing that she brought me was stability, when everything and everyone else in my life was in flux. That was useful. Her advice in some significant areas was way off base, and I followed it to my detriment. Had I been in a less tenuous situation perhaps I would have been more critical of her suggestions and thought them through more thoroughly before acting.
