MissScripture Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 My printer messes up my computer every time I try to use it. I just re-installed it (I un-installed it last year, because it was being a pain), and printed something. It worked fine, minus the fact that it was out of colored ink. I changed the ink cartridge, and it wanted me to align it, so I did. Then, I tried to print what I'd printed before. And it just sits there --the computer tells me it's sending it, but the printer doesn't do anything, and then my computer starts freezing up. Any ideas what's up and what can be done to fix it? I sort of need both my computer and printer in working order. Thanks.
XIX Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 Any solution that doesn't involve an anvil probably won't solve your problem.
Starets Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 well, lets start with the basics. Some of these will sound dumb, but its surprising how some of them turn out to be right. 1. Make sure the printer cable has not come loose. 2. try turning off the printer for 30seconds and turning it back on again 3. reboot the comptur then try again

You can find those on the website of the company for your printer.
Innocent Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 Maybe you could try clearing the print queue and resending the print job?
Theologian in Training Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007
Maybe you could try clearing the print queue and resending the print job?
Actually, it sounds like there is a communication error between the computer and printer. Normally, this would be due to a network problem if it was a network printer, however, since it does not sound like that, it is most likely the cord she is using or the drivers are not properly installed. Sometimes it can be solved by restarting both, but more often than not, it can be traced to cords or software....can you tell I have fixed a lot of printers
MissScripture Posted September 17, 2007 Author Posted September 17, 2007 It's not the cords loose, cuz I just hooked it up. I did try turning it off and back on, and that didn't help. I didn't try to turn the computer off and back on, but I think I did last year and it didn't do much then, but I can try it again. And I would check for the most recent driver if I knew what that meant...

abercius24 Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 (edited) I don't mean to be a spoiled sport, but modern printers aren't really made to last anymore. If your printer is at least 1-2 years old, its probably the internal mechanics that have simply worn out. It would cost you more to fix it than it would be buy a new one. I just buy inexpensive printers now and expect to replace them every 2 years. Edited September 17, 2007 by abercius24

So, I don't think it is anything mechanical...

HP Deskjet 580, Laserjet 220, etc. (I was making those numbers up, have no idea if they exist, just using it as an example)
Innocent Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 What OS are you running? Is it Microsoft Windows, or GNU/Linux, or Apple Mac OS X, or something else ?
Innocent Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 (edited) If you're running Linux, you might have to get the drivers from the HP website, or you might have to install HPLIP. I did that last week and got my HP inkjet printer running. But since it was already working, perhaps your problem is something else. Edited September 17, 2007 by Innocent

(I have an old computer...) The printer did work for a year and a half, then last year, it started acting up, so I uninstalled it, and then re-installed it this year. It printed once, just fine, and then started being dumb again.
Starets Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 whenever i do any kind of uninstalling and reinstalling, I restart the computer. so make sure you have the most recent drivers from the HP web site. then unstall the drivers, restart the computer and then reinstall the drivers. i went straight from win98 to win2000 to xp and never touched winmillenium

I would never have, except that it came on this computer, which I was given, so I deal with it.
Theologian in Training Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 You might try using their remove tool as it will remove everything from your computer and then reinstall the drivers. Unfortunately, they no longer offer those drivers on their website , so I could not help you there, but try removing everything and I mean everything and then reinstall. You can find the uninstall utility here http://tinyurl.com/26pvwu
abercius24 Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 If I were you, I'd look into getting an old copy of Windows XP on eBay and upgrade your operating system. Windows ME is no longer supported, its full of vulnerabilities, and it just plain stinks. If you buy a copy of Windows XP, make sure you get the certificate of authenticity key, too.
abercius24 Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 (edited) Double post. Nothing to see here. Move on please... Edited September 18, 2007 by abercius24
