I'm doing my grad studies at a public university with ~25000 students. Big change!

Brigid
I'm at a catholic high school, and I love it!! St. Thomas Aquinas HS As far as the lukewarmity of most catholic high schoolers, I agree, but I think there are lukewarm catholics everywhere. In a public school, the ones that are on fire for their faith will stand out more and probably find each other, so it seems like there is more. In a Catholic school, the firey people blend in with the lukewarms, and they don't have as much of a need to find and befriend their fellow firey people. that's not to say that you won't find the firies together, you do, but not quite as much, I don't think... well, that's my theory, anyway.
MissyP89
I actually have a theory as to why kids at catholic schools are lukewarm: catholic schoolers are so used to being surrounded by catholicism that they take it for granted, whereas public schoolers are denied that opportunity, so they cling to their faith all the more. What do you think?
I think you've got a good idea, there. I would even go so far as to say it can be that way in Catholic children of Catholic parents and grandparents back through the generations. My family is this way, and I'm the only practicing Catholic. I think it might be because it's always been around in our lives. It was never anything special because it's just something we're used to. "Going through the motions," you know? It's a shame, yes, but it happens a lot--all the Catholics I know are this way, and I was before I got a clue. I see a lot of differences between born Catholics and Catholic converts. I find it interesting.
MissyP89
Interesting--Fr. Groeschel made me think of this thread.
"You can drag your children to church, but it may make them resent the church a great deal. If you keep forcing it, it'll drive them away from the Church. Forcing people just doesn't work in religion."
Edited April 15, 2007 by MissyP89
Fr. Antony Maria OSB
I go to an all boys Catholic high-school run by Benedictine monks. It's awesome! As to lukwarmness in Catholic schools, I can see how always being surrounded by Catholicism and taking it for granted could work that way, but I was the exact opposite. Before high-school (end of eighth grade, actually, after Confirmation), I really just went through the motions. But going to a Catholic school where Mass is offered daily and being surrounded by monks everyday (I think there are 12 on staff, teaching in almost every subject matter) has really helped me grow in my Faith. I wouldn't trade anything for it! Oh, and I also went to Catholic grade school, so this is all that I've really known. May God bless and protect you always in all of your endeavors!
