dominicansoul Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 fire bill maher Let's do our part to get this guy off the air. He has been allowed to attack our Faith, and has gone overboard too many times. Click on the link above and sign the petition.
Autumn Dusk Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 (edited) he's a raunchy comedian, if you take him that seriously then we need to pation to get you to a shrink. 1) he was in hiter's youth. He was a natzi. However he was a victim and not a perpetrator. Does it matter, certainly. However, Anyone with brains has figured that this is just a dumb joke by now. 2) Everyone suspects the vatican of knowing more about the scandals then it lets on. Honestly, even as a faithful catholic I find it hard to believe they all knew nothing. Kinda like Enron. Maybe he wasn't in the coverup but seriously? He knew nothing? He's proven great strides towards forgvieness just when the media stopped making a circus of the scadal. And so its going to be the butt of jokes Edited April 21, 2008 by Autumn Dusk
TotusTuusMaria Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Not only has Bill Maher made accusations that were not true about the Holy Father and every single priest in the Catholic Church, but he has used the Blessed Mother and the Holy Eucharist as the "butt of his jokes" as well:
"The problem is they drill religion into your head when you are very young. Well, when you are four years old, you believe in Santa Claus, too. Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, the Virgin Birth, sure! When you're a priest everyday spewing this bull**** about the apple and the snake, etc., you can see him just saying, 'Ah, ****it, just blow me, kid!'" - Bill Maher "Come on, it's so gay, the Church! With the robes and the smoke and kneeling in front of the priest with your mouth open eating God." - Bill Maher "You can’t be a rational person six days of the week and put on a suit and make rational decisions and go to work and, on one day of the week, go to a building and think you’re drinking the blood of a 2,000-year-old space god. That doesn’t make you a person of faith … that makes you a schizophrenic.” “…UFOs are a lot more likely than a space god [that] flew down bodily and you know who was the Son of God and you know had sex with a Palestinian woman…” - Bill Maher
I have signed the petition. If he mocked the Muslim or Jewish religion the way he does Catholicism, he would have been fired a long time ago.
cathoholic_anonymous Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 I just don't listen to people like this. If he's sacked as a result of Catholic protests, he will be able to play the martyr. He'd probably enjoy it. It is far better just to ignore and to go on praying and living as we always have. That will do more for us than petitioning to get a third-rate comedian sacked. (Even if I weren't Catholic, I wouldn't find those jokes funny.)
Autumn Dusk Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 I'm not saying its right. However! He makes these comments at the rate of once a year....while it is disgusting, the notion that he makes fun of no-one else is simply ludicrous. He's a TV shock-jock and the network isn't going to take him off the air for saying what he did about the pope/catholic church. He's said worse about Brittany Spears who is just really a sad, lost girl...and I'm sure staunch fans of hers want him to cut out the negativity, too. Not going to happen. Sure, they do make fun of who they can get away with, but making fun of the Catholic church means that we are part of the greater stabilities in life. And i do remmeber him making cracks about jews and quite a few cracks about moslems/islam/sadaam hussain, so don't go by random quotes on the website for your information.
prose Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 He is a staunch atheist. It isn't just the Catholic Church that he bashes, it is anyone who believes anything different than him. That being the case, it is still wrong. I don't care if it make him a "martyr", anything that gets this evil man off the air, I will do.
fides quarens intellectum Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 i used to love Bill Maher... back when i was an atheist. i'm having problems with that website, though - the links disappear a second after i refresh the screen. oh, well.

cmotherofpirl Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Hah! put the jerk on your prayer list, let the Holy Spirit drown him in irresistable graces so he converts and has to eat his own words...

You should be more sensitive to those who seek mental help. #1 and #2 : I don't need Bill Maher telling me these things about my Pope or the Catholic Church. For me, he's bullying my Mother, and when my Mother is being attacked I want to do something about it. If you don't want to sign the petition, don't. But please, leave your comments about me needing a shrink and not having a brain to yourself. Perhaps you'll be Maher's next guest? "People who get their panties in a bind." Yup, you'd fit very well on his show!

It is not very stable to go yelping about a shock jock without understanding that this would feed his ego. There are better ways of wasting or spending your time. WE ALL KNOW people make fun of the Catholic church. Compared to some comedians Bill Mahr is meek. I can make any recommendation I want, becuase I do see it as nutty to sign an online petition over a dozen jokes made in nearly a decade. Had all these jokes been in one week I'd probably be concerned, but they haven't. Just like on this forum its best not to feed the troll and thats all he is...poking people until they do something more for him to make fun over. You REALLY, honestly think that this wouldn't make him laugh more? That the liberal network actually CARES? They'd probably tell him to make more jokes. If you believe that and still think you don't need help you certinally are deluded. I think a joke every year or so is fine. Its rather expected. I'd rather be a catholic that someone can make a joke about than a moslem who can't be joked about and is racially and religiously profiled as a danger to society every where they go. Actually, you'd be the better guest. You're the one in a tizzy over a couple of jokes from a man who offends almost everyone else he comes into contact with.
Theologian in Training Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 (edited) So, for those who feel as though it is giving him what he wants, is it better to ignore him and hope that he goes away on his own or attempt to sign a petition that may or may not be effective? It would seem doing something rather than nothing would be the better option here. While I am sure he criticizes every religion equally, if he went this far with the Jewish religion, he might not still have a job, and if he went this far with the Muslims, we might be praying for the repose of his soul... kujo Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Free speech anyone? We have to allow the nutters to speak their nutty mind in order for us to be allowed to speak ours. It's the proverbial double-edged sword. I thought we had something in this country called FREE SPEECH!
Autumn Dusk Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008
it better to ignore him and hope that he goes away on his own or attempt to sign a petition that may or may not be effective?
Telling the liberal, god hating overall christrian-bashing network that you don't think its fair for for a shock jock to make fun of people is like putting a cake in front of a baby everyday and then not knowing why the kid is fat. It would be a great for them, funny and such.
While I am sure he criticizes every religion equally, if he went this far with the Jewish religion, he might not still have a job, and if he went this far with the Muslims, we might be praying for the repose of his soul...
Umm...actually he makes fun of muslems quite a bit...not so offensive ways but certinally in more frequency than the catholic jokes. Jews don't really have much to make fun of.
Akalyte Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Bill Maher bashes other religions but he bashes Catholicism the most.. Ive heard a lot from his shows, i watched just to see how much he bashes us.. It was very hard to do. This man is a bigot and an ignorant fool. HBO better take him off the air. This is not "HUMOR" it's hatred.

KnightofChrist Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Bill Maher is a joke, free speech he may have but we do not have to listen. Of course he'd never get away with the things he says if he was a christian talking about atheist and such.
Akalyte Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 i wrote to the guy in charge of HBO and explained that Bill Maher must be fired.
ReinnieR Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 (edited) do you mind sharing that letter with the rest of us. i'm just really interested on what you have to say. if i'm not too lazy i might write a similar letter. Edited April 22, 2008 by ReinnieR
Guest neilbakker Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Let us pray for Bill Maher to come BACK to the Catholic Church (For he was Baptized and Confirmed in the Church), give a good confession, receive absolution for these horrible sins and have true contrition. May the Mercy and Grace of Christ sink into his soul. Wouldn't it be great to have him on our side??
