lilac_angel
Love his authoritarian enforcement on what we should be learning, based on his own opinion of which language is important. I agree that people are losing their grip on English, and it's sad. Let's try to work on what we have, first. I have nothing against a more strict enforcement of learning a second language in high school and beyond (I know some basic Spanish) but it shouldn't be shoved down our throats and made an additional requirement for parents, whose teaching plates are full enough. The more I learn about this guy, the more disgusted I become.
BG45
Ditto on the basic Spanish. At work I'm the only one who even speaks a small amount, therefore the others send any Spanish speaking customer to me.

kujo
well, i always thought that canada's dual language helped in that way, having a good reason for children to learn a second language. and really it is a bigger problem in america/canada than in non english speaking countries. when i was in guatemala, a super poor country about half the population spoke two or more languages, english, spanish, mayan and some with french. its a life skill down there, you simply cant make it successfully unless you speak english. now it is a bit different here, but it would be good if people started learning second languages more diligently.
Yeah, bilingualism has worked out GREAT for Canada. Quebec isn't on the verge of secession or anything...
Agreed. The point is not to isolate immigrants I don't think, the reason for a national language makes it so that a fewer number of people have to learn one new language instead of domestic-born citizens having to learn multiple new languages. I'm definitely in support of immigrants not abandoning their native language for sure. I think its important to keep your roots. But if you want to function in an English world you should learn language. It's not about being bias or racist or anything of the sort. It's simply much easier for one smaller group of people (immigrants) to learn one new language instead of many more people (domestic-born peoples) to have to learn many new languages to keep up with all the new immigrants. If we are required to learn Spanish, then who's to say we shouldn't also be required to learn other prominent languages such as Chinese or Russian or any other European language (Portuguese, German etc.)? I really don't like this guy...
WORD! I agree you!!!!

CatherineM
It is sure hard for me at the grocery store here. Every time I pick up a can to read the label stuff, I always end up with the French side first. Seriously, a guy sued the province here, and the decision recently is that he was entitled to having his speeding ticket written in French. If the appeal fails, the Province is going to have to re-write all laws, street signs, etc., in French too. I'd rather see those millions go into the roads and public transit. Fidei Defensor
English is my first language, but I love spanish.

lilac_angel
I chose it over French for our high school language requirement and carried that over to college for as long as I had to. My younger siblings may have started some Spanish in lower grades, and I have no problem with that either, if it's taught in school early on. But to say that all parents need to *make sure* we teach it to them... no thanks. Nobody around here where I live even speaks Spanish.
