Strong criticism of US religious orders from Vatican prefect
October 14, 2008
Cardinal Franc Rode, prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, offered strong and trenchant criticism of older religious orders in the US during a recent talk in Massachusetts. ‘There are those who have opted for ways that take them outside communion with Christ in the Catholic Church, although they themselves may have opted to ‘stay’ in the Church physically,’ he said. Criticizing the ‘hermeneutic of discontinuity’ in postconciliar religious life and pointing to the vitality of younger communities, Cardinal Rode called upon religious to be faithful to the teaching of the Church, the person of the Holy Father, and the charisms of their founders.

What pain! I pray our Lord to forgive us and to teach to us the road in order to return to the tradition when who embraced the religious life he was a penance witness for austere look and for the poverty of the religious habit.

And people talk so much about the importance of women wearing the habit. We need to focus on the male habit too.

yes, this is very surprising. quite the same in my country. Some religious men wear their habits during Mass only, or when they go to give meetings, public talks, then they take them off. I once read in a newspaper, some kind of editorial, that asks the religious to wear their habits, not just ordinary polos.

Sometimes I think of nuns here who wear their thick habits, even if no one sees them. I asked a nun, the portress, if it uncomfortable(she's a poor clare), and she said yes, it's too hot (we're a tropical country) but that won't "take their habit" away. they wear it as a sign of consecration, as penance. I was very happy to hear her answer. They still wear the head covering (is it the wimple), the mantle.

How I wish religious men, as well as priests, will wear their habits.

I was in the Phillies in January this year and I found it overbearingly warm: any lady who can deal with a thick habit in those temps and humidity has my respect, although I wouldn't blame anyone who opted for a thinner one.

the lords sheep

I go to school with Dominicans who wear the habit, and I must say that daily when I see them teaching I reflect on the significance and the power of the habit.
I think, however, that the habit is (unfortunately) not the only area which many modern religious are struggling. It seems that a number have forgotten that they are called within the context of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, and thus are to adhere to all She teaches.

Sister Rose Therese

This was at a symposium on apostolic religious life.
You can read the transcripts of Cardinal Rode's talk and others here.

I"m glad you've been to my country! What part of the Philippines have you been?

The OCD Nuns here in our city still wear the wimple, the cowl-like veil, and their mantles. Some don't.

Should we start campaigning for the "habits for men"?
