It's really up to personal choices in that case. It's weighing the possibility that they buy alcohol or drugs with the possibility that they actually buy food. You have to decide which is more important, the risk that they buy alcohol with it, or the chance you take that they go hungry because they couldn't afford any. Either choice is acceptable so long as you have reason for your decision.
Winchester Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 You mean humans who hold some evil things as good might still do good works? Who knew?
Norseman82 Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008
Because homeless counselors will tell you never give people money, since it is usually converted to drugs or alcohol.
Another thing I do is just go into Wendy's or Subway and but them a sandwich. There are very few people I will give money to. One is a 90-year old blind person who sits near the bridge every day by the downtown train station. I can also see giving money to someone in a wheelchair who has lost one or more limbs; it is hard to fake something like that.

Lounge Daddy Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Maybe that wasn't a charitable comment?
Justin86 Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Charitable enough in my world, but the way half these people think, who knows?
flip Posted November 30, 2008 Author Posted November 30, 2008 giving people money is fine. buying them food certificates is fine. talking to them, finding out their name, bringing them into your home, getting them cleaned up, helping them, restoring them to society - that's Christianity they are our BROTHERS and SISTERS in Christ. If your biological brother or sister was on the street you wouldn't say "I can't give you money because that will just make you poorer". You wouldn't give them a gift certificate to McDonalds.

FSM Sister Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Father Pfleger celebrates Mass, too. Doesn't the bible say that "Many will call me "Lord, Lord." If Mr. Obama and his girls help the poor, good for them. I pray that he will do more good than harm. I hope he won't use the statistics on numbers of poor as justification for abortion. I hope he won't use poverty, hunger, and unemployment as justification for limiting the number of children a couple can have, as is done in China.

St. Columbanus Church, where President-elect Obama has volunteered before, feeds nearly 500 people a week. But he pointed out that times are particularly tough. "The number of people who are getting food this year is up 33 percent," he said. "It gives a sense times are tough -- and I think that on Thanksgiving it's important for us to remember there's a need for support." When a group of children appeared in the window of the church's school, President-elect Obama decided to visit the school's auditorium, where hundreds of the school's students quickly assembled.
Does the food pantry screen those who eat there to make sure they are pro-life? Didymus Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 I'm glad it was a Catholic Church he volunteered at. Maybe some day he'll realize the value of an ally the Church is to him on some very important issues, and start listening more intently to what Catholics have to say about abortion.

Don't you think it more responsible to take the advice of those counselors who deal with them on a daily basis? Isn't it more acceptable to take them to the nearest store or restaurant and know you are actually feeding them and not a habit?
