TotusTuusMaria
This is kind of sad. This poor Bishop.... he is getting so much heat just because he believes something different about history. If I recall, he didn't deny the holocaust just that the numbers were less than commonly believed.

Vincent Vega
The wrong move in my opinion.
Jesus_lol
well, for a public figure, you would think he would have been smart enough to keep out of that "issue" what purpose does it serve anyways?
TotusTuusMaria
He could have been more prudent, but losing his position and getting this much heat over such comments... this is being over-done.
kenrockthefirst
On the one hand, the man's views about the Holocaust are neither here nor there, since they do not deal with matters of morals or faith. On the other hand, the unnecessary scandal is, well, unnecessary. It would be as if Williamson posited that the moon landings were fake: irrelevant but nutty, and bringing disrepute onto his office and the Church as a whole. Aloysius
I like +Williamson better than most of the bishops in good standing in the Church... he's an honest man, and he's a humble man; two qualities missing in many of them. He's always lacked a bit of prudence, but he's honest, straightforward and humble and I admire that about him regardless of his views which tend to be a bit on the conspiracy-theory side of history. his response to the demand that he recant his views? he said he'd re-examine all the evidence that had convinced him of this position when he studied it in the 80's and that that would take time. he didn't capitulate just for the sake of making people happy, he remained honest about his views and now he's going to re-study that issue because he won't just say something he doesn't agree with, but he won't stubbornly refuse to budge either. I can't say I agree with his opinion, but I can respect him for his courage and determination. Furthermore, I am convinced he did not make these claims to belittle the horrors of the war, or to allow a 'come-back' of nazism or to invite ills to any groups. I think its been blown out of proportion. I do not undertand, with the information available, why he would be removed from his responsibilities so readily by the Church, but I trust that whatever facts lay hidden from us is for good reason and give proper cause. I was so impressed by his humility in that letter he wrote apologizing for causing everyone to be so upset and stuff. that was so sad that people were still unkind after he said that. It's a strange world we live in.

A Christian of any kind is supposed to attract people to the faith; at the very least they should make sure their facts are straight before rekindling people's misconceptions regarding the Church, Hitler, and the Holocaust. I haven't been following the Bishop's antics though, were these public statements that he made, or merely private statements made public?
