track2004
Anyone a fan of The Watchmen (the graphic novel) and totally stoked about the new movie? Anyone want to talk about how different the theory of heroes is in The Watchmen as compared to previous comics & graphic novels? Any comments on the morality of either? "But the world is so full of ... miracles that they become commonplace and we forget... I forget. We gaze continually at the world and it grows dull in our perceptions. Yet seen from the another's vantage point. As if new, it may still take our breath away."
Nihil Obstat
I thought the previews looked really good. I'm often not that into graphic novels though. Unfortunately I can't get in to see it. Dunno what they rated it in the States, but I'm relatively sure it's 18A here.
thicke
Well, most of the Watchmen were based on Charlton Comics heroes. Originally Watchmen was meant to be an introduction of these heroes to the DC universe when DC bought the Charlton assets in 1985. They decided to make the story independent due to the reluctance to kill off certain characters. If you look up these characters on the web, you can see the similarities. Peacemaker = The Comedian The Question = Rorschach Nightshade = Silk Specter Blue Beetle = Night Owl Mr Atom = Doctor Manhattan Thunderbolt = Ozymandias I was working at a comic shop when Watchmen came out. I can remember picking the new DC titles with the Charlton characters they did after Watchmen for nostalgia sake (no pun intended). I was mostly disappointed. What else should one expect from a movie directed by the guy who made "300" and "Sin City"? Superhero movies usually aren't R.

I actually haven't looked if it's 14A or 18A. The Canadian censors are awful; I have a feeling that half of their job description is to drink until they can't see straight. Nihil Obstat
14A everywhere in Canada except Ontario (18A) and Quebec (13+ because they're weird like that). I rest my case. Absolutely hammered.

Frank Miller wrote and drew the 300 and Sin City comics on which those movies were (very closely) based. Watchmen is based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore, who also wrote V for Vendetta (among other things). I haven't watched it yet (Bubblicious wants me to watch it tomorrow at the same time she does, though we're now in different states), but apparently it for the most part follows the book very closely though, by necessity, large parts are omitted. The adult content is found in the source novel - it's definitely not a story for kids, but a dark and complex satire/drama, despite the "superhero" theme. The comic is quite entertaining in its geeky way. It's a brilliantly told (if extremely cynical) story, despite the fact that I don't agree with a lot of the far-left underpinnings of the tale. If you can swing it, you should see it on IMAX. In the words of Kevin Smith, who reviewed it a while back after seeing a sneak preview, it is an opus that does everything you'd want it to do. I was really afraid that it was gonna smell of elderberries, despite the fact that I figured Synder would be the only director I could see coming close to pulling it off. And yeah, there's stuff that's omitted (not "large parts," though the ending is a bit different) but, for the most part, it's minor things that wouldn't have contributed much to the overall movie experience. Dude, you're gonna love it.
CrossCuT
For the longest time I was SO excited to see this movie! I havnt seen it yet, but my desire to see it has now gone so it doesnt matter. My brother saw the midnight showing thursday night and told me the next day that yes, it was pretty darn cool, but there was alot more nudity than he expected. I am to understand that the blue superhero guy is pretty much letting his little willy sway freely without much censorship for many scenes. There is also a 3 minute sex scene that shows more nudity and I just don’t think that any of this is necessary at all. That just kinda turned me off to the movie. Im sure the other elements of the movie such as action, special effects, etc are really great, but I no longer want to spend the money on it. My friends bf saw it on friday and said it was a huge waste of his time. He thought it was pretty gross. So I dunno. Tis my take.
Nihil Obstat
I heard a reviewer mention "far-left undertones". Is that a legitimate point?
