To reiterate,

1. Registration ends Friday at midnight GMT - 6.

2. This will be a round robin event. Meaning you will play every opponent twice (once as white and one as black)

3. A win gets you a point, and a draw gets you a half point.

4. You will play one opponent a week. (so two games)

5. Games will be 10 minutes with 15 second increment.

6. Games will be played on Yahoo Standard Chess and instructions will be posted shortly.

7. Pairings will be posted shortly after registration ends. You will be assigned to play one person per week. Now, I know about cubfan_1980 being gone the second week.

Basically just set up a time to play both games within a week. Or try too.

PM me your results. I will have a data table set up.

[b]Detailed Instructions for playing on Yahoo Chess.[/b]

2.On the top right click on “Sign In.”
3.Enter your information correctly as asked.
4.There is a row of words near the top center such as “All Games, Arcade, Board.” Click on “Board.”
5.You will be presented with a list of games. Click “Chess.”
6.Now you need to click the button just to the left that says “Go Now.”
7.Yahoo will load up an ad. Click the “Click Here to Continue.”
8.Now there will be a yellow box titled “Looking for Standard Chess?” Click it.
9.Now you will need to scroll down a bit and you will be presented with several rooms. You and your opponent will need to agree on one. Enter by clicking it.
10.You will be asked to enter a verification code. Enter it. If it fails, don't worry. You can always try again.
11.Now one person will need to “Create a table.”
12.After the page loads click on “Sit.” The person who created the table will need to click on “Set Timer.” Correct time control will 10 minutes with 15 second increment. Click on “Start Game” when your opponent arrives. Make sure it is someone from Phatmass and not some random person.

PM me your results. If you want, at the end of each game, you can click on the "Email History" right below the chess notation and you can post it on Phatmass and offer your respective thoughts..

Everyone will eventually play everyone. So this will take 5 weeks. If you need a week off for whatever reason...that's cool as long as you let me and your respected opponent know in advance. I know cubfan_1980 needs the second week off so he will just make up a round when he can later.

Due to a funeral for my aunt that I need to attend next Friday, I'm no longer flying to Phoenix next weekend, and thus I won't need the half point bye round in the that second week.

So, I presume we just get in touch this week and plan a time to play?

6.Nxe4 d5 (here white could have tried Bc4xf7 followed by Nxe4 where white has disrupted black's right to castle and slightly exposes the black king)
7. Bd3 dxe4

11. Be3 Nf6 (good job by white not taking and instead continuing with development)
12. Qd3 c4 (black grabs a bit of space and sets up to win a piece if white takes the pawn)

15. Qxb7 Qd6 originally I was just going to make the move Ra8-b8 and give white another pawn and get a rook deep in my opponent's territory however after thinking for a minute I realized I could develop my queen to a better square and set up a trap
16. Rfe1 Rfb8 * and white loses the queen. Better was Nf3-Ne5 which gives the queen a retreat square and prevents the black light-squared bishop from invading the white side by moving to d3.

Game continued for another 7 or so moves before white resigns.

4. c3 cxd4 (better for black here is Nb8-c6 as it develops a piece. If white is not smart and takes the pawn, black just retakes it with his dark squared bishop and develops another piece.)

8. Bd3 O-O (a lot of credit to my opponent as it is important to develop your pieces. You really do not want to start attacking until you have all your pieces out and king castled to safety. Many people who know how to play chess could play many more decent games if they understood this.)
9. O-O Bd6 (black realizes that white's bishop is much more effective and therefore tries to trade it off. However, due to the bishop being misplaced in the first place, this loses time and white is ready to respond by clogging the middle with his pieces.)
10. Ne5 a6
11. g4

(a very aggressive move by white. Normally it is not a good idea to move the pawns in front of your king in this manner, however white has two bishops pointed to the kingside and a knight looking for attacking chances. White wants to get in g5 kicking the knight and bringing the queen into the attack.)

11 ... Qc7 Here black should have probably tried (11...Bxe5 12. dxe5 Nd7)

and here black's queen and get into white's kingside. Plus black can win a pawn. Black would have a slight advantage here.

12. g5 Nd7 (Instead of Nd7, black could have kept the game going with 12...Bxe5 13. Bxe5 Nxe5 14. dxe5 Nd7. White still had a definite edge, but the game is still going.)

Here I look ahead and see up to move 20 where white shows definite compensation for the sac and is clearly winning. I do not see the exact checkmate, but I knew I was winning enough that I could stop looking and started the final sequence. From here, it is pretty much forced.

16. Qxg6+ Kh8

17. Qh6+ Kg8 (Note that white does not take the pawn but instead gives check and then takes the pawn. If I took the pawn first 17. Qxe6 Nde5 18. Qh6+ Qh7 and here white's best move is 19. Qxh7+ Kxh7 completely equalizing.
