tinytherese Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 So I'm heading off to Italy soon for spring break and I thought that it would be a nice idea to get a gift for the parish priest at the town of my college. I'll be going to teh Vatican and I thought that it would be cool to get him something from the gift shop there. Got any suggestions?
Nihil Obstat Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 A hip flask with the Vatican flag on it. For carrying holy water. Emergency baptisms, you know.
morostheos Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 How much are you looking to spend on the gift? There are so many cool things to get there! Although, the best stores to shop at aren't actually at the Vatican, they are nearby.
Jaime Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 An autographed picture of the Holy Father would be an awesome gift
Era Might Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Maybe get him something that has to do with a local Italian Saint?
CatherineM Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 I'd sneak into the Vatican apartments, and score him some Pope pj's.

That may make him feel guilty or embarassed for accepting such a gift.
Luigi Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 There's a lto of cheesy stuff available - sold in Italy but made in sweat shops overseas. Of course you can find some stuff, too, but sometimes you have to look pretty hard for it. If somebody on the street tries to sell you something that ben blessed by the Pope, it probably has been, but all that means is that the guy had the item on his person at the noon blessing on Sunday or Wednesday - when I was there, about half a dozen of these guys opened their coats like flashers when the Pope gave his blessing, and the coats were lined with rosaries, holy cards, statuettes - it was incredible. I'd aim for something small & cute - a refrigerator magnet of St. Peter's - or something consumable - I like Italian cologne, but that might be too personal for a priest. If he doesn't abstain from alcohol, you might bring back a small bottle of Limoncello (often hand painated), Sambucca (I can't stand the stuff, myself), or a bottle of wine. Just be sure you enclose it in a water-tight palstic bag before you pack it - if it breaks in transit...

CatherineM Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 I had a friend who just came back from one of those old lady tour junkets. She said the churches they went to there used a really nice grade of Cabernet for their communion wine. You could get him a small bottle of the stuff the churches get to use there, for his personal masses. You know, see how the other half lives.
tinytherese Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 I know this priest outside of simply going to mass. I'm his volunteer assistant at RCIA.

Get him a good bottle of wine be careful though, there is never a shortage of locals who want to steal from tourists
