Didacus
Would you mention bad BO to a complete stranger though? Considering the circumstance, I think calling the police and informing them of the situation might be acceptable. If you approach the car at a drive-thru while waiting behind them, they might save the trouble and call the police for you!
Good point. I think calling the police would be acceptable also, however I'd hate for people to get tickets.
cmotherofpirl
So every Sunday morning I play mass, go get a croissanwich at BK, then go back to church and play the second morning mass. So today I'm waiting in the drivethrough and I notice that the car in front of me has 4 people and a baby in a car seat. But the car is a compact car and the baby car seat is positioned on the floor between the two people in the back seat and its not secure. Now I'm getting ticked and I'm concerned for the baby's safety. One sudden stop and this kid (car seat and all) is literally going straight at the front window. So I'm sitting there trying to figure out what's appropriate to do. Do I call the police and give them the license plate? Its a small burb and its Sunday morning so they could be found pretty quick. And it is against the law. Do I get out and talk to them? Am I overreacting to the situation? As I ponder this, they get their food and head off. When I pull up to the window, the BK cashier tells me that they paid for my meal. The local Christian radio station has been promoting doing random acts of kindness in fast food drivethrus and apparently I was the latest recipient. (I was actually listening to the station when this all occurred. so now I'm ticked and really touched by the free croissanwich. it was a confusing morning
Is it possible they had secured it underneath and you just couldn't see it? It is also possible they had no other way to get where they are going and its the best they could do for the moment? Its one of those moments no matter what you do, you feel guilt. prose
I would have reported them to the police. Yes, they were nice to buy you a sandwich, but if that baby died or was injured due to their poor judgment, then that would be something on your conscience as well. Our society tends to look away too much in general ( I think). Sometimes it is important to get involved. Anyways, I hate to piss on the parade, but they need to realize the risks of their actions, and if that comes in the form of a police officer, so be it. As for confronting them, I wouldn't bother. Too many factors that could make the situation unsafe. The law can talk to them and decide whether they should be ticketed. That is the safest thing to do for all parties involved. Take two trips. Less people per trip. It may not be as convenient, but it certainly is worth it for the life of a baby.

Nihil Obstat
What's the law regarding adults and seat belts? I believe the law in Alberta is that you can have more adults than seatbelts, but children *must* be belted. Better an adult not belted than an infant. Here in Nebraska, the driver and front passenger are required to wear seat belts, but adult passengers in the back are not (I think). I'm pretty sure children have to be buckled up no matter what. Also, they only ticket you for not wearing your seatbelt if you get pulled over something else like speeding.
ironmonk
Many of us grew up in a time that our parents didn't have car seats, and shocker... we lived. ;o) They would have to be driving pretty crazy (high speeds, swerving, etc...) to put the child in real danger. If they're just driving around town under 35 mph chances are the child has more risk at getting chaffed by the seat belts than injured by an accident. One can be a perfect driver and still get killed because there are so many other drivers to worry about. A child in an unsecured child seat is in real danger, no matter how "good" of a driver is behind the wheel. There are several "bad" drivers behind the wheels of vehicles. There are a few bad drivers on the road. A good driver behind the wheel looks out for bad drivers and avoids them. Seeing a child not secured in a car seat or in an unsecured car seat is no reason to get angry over. Chances are low something bad would happen. We don't know enough about the situation why a small car would be full of people to where they had to unbuckle the car seat. How do we know that the car seat is not secured to the floor of the car. There are a lot of other things to get angry over in this world than having control over people in their cars and their children. Maybe spend the time, effort, and stress over babies murdered in the womb or shortly after leaving it. God Bless, ironmonk
