And when I hear news reports that there are pushes for for laws to make people as old a TWELVE be in car seats, well, that is taking it TOO FAR (I can understand infants, but when I was twelve, it would have been considered degrading).
Yeah, I have to agree there. I know some States stipulate that a child must be in a booster seat until both 8 years old and 80lbs. I wouldn't have been out of a booster seat until closer to 10-12 then.
Many of us grew up in a time that our parents didn't have car seats, and shocker... we lived. ;o)

They would have to be driving pretty crazy (high speeds, swerving, etc...) to put the child in real danger. If they're just driving around town under 35 mph chances are the child has more risk at getting chaffed by the seat belts than injured by an accident.

Of course they drove cars as big as tanks then, too. <fondly remembers Mom's 1969 Ford Galaxie 500> My "carseat" was a do-hicky that was set over the back of the benchseat. It wasn't secured or anything. It had a stering wheel and a horn. Good times.

:smokey: I remember that...
The carseat was empty
This is what I was thinking/hoping.

My ds is still sits on a booster and he's ten. He's nowhere near tall enough to wear the shoulder belt properly.

In most of the states I've been through with higher age requirements for car seats the age/weight is an either-or, not both. NY, I believe, right now is at a 6 years or 60 lbs. And I think it was last summer that MI changed their law to 8 years or 80 lbs. I would have been a teenager before being out of a car seat if it wasn't either-or.

All my kids are, too. Granted they are a bit younger than your kiddos, but Adrienne will be 6 this summer and we'll probably still keep her in it (even though the law here would allow her to be out of it when she turns 6) for the same reason. Plus, my kids actually really like their car seats (they are in the type that converts to a booster that can use just the seat belt instead of using the car seat buckles).

I just don't understand why people would not want to do anything in their power to protect their children. :idontknow:

LOL comparing no car seat to drugs and war... is laughable.

Children not buckled down or in a car seat who try to open doors, crawl on the driver, etc... are a serious danger.

A child in a car seat that is on the floor of the car, is not in a horrible thing... someone could have secured it, or if it's not secure it's better than the kid crawling around the car.

Point being... a kid not in a car seat is not a major infraction and there is no one to call for misdemeanor like that. The police have better things to do and if an officer sees it or finds a child not in a car seat they <gasp> only issue a ticket. People get a heftier fine for throwing a cigarette butt out of their window than a kid not being in a car seat, and people are comping it to war and drugs ROTFLOL

Disagreed. Better than a kid crawling around the car? Sure for others around. That kid, if there is one in that car seat, has put all his trust in people to take care of them. He has no choice. He is trusting that his life will be taken care of. JUST because he is in a car seat DOES NOT MEAN that he is protected.

Police SHOULD pull people over for not having kids in a car seat. It is called NEGLIGANCE and that is considered a major infraction. DCFS can be called on families for negligance. No difference here. Kids do not know better. Therefore it is the responsibility of the adults in the car to make sure that the kids are secured.

I don't know about comparing to drugs and war. I just know that unsecured kids is a serious matter.

DCFS? They are a danger to many children. I've met a few people who work for them, they're delusional and convict people wrongly.

It wasn't until shortly after you were born that child seats became law in most states... When I was a child, it wasn't the law... what do you think people did back then? They made their kids sit still in the car with a seat belt on... and the majority of us did.

A child not in a car seat is not a reason to call DCFS. To accuse a parent of neglect over a child not being in a car seat to where some DCFS agent takes them away and gives them to some stranger is uncharitable and not taking the child's well being into consideration whatsoever. For all anyone knows it could be a one time trip without a car seat... and if it's an everyday thing, then a cop will see it eventually. I'm sure a small car with four adults and a kid in a car seat on the floor is probably a one time event.

Most cops I know will pull someone over for seeing a kid out of a seat, and they give a ticket, then send them on their way... with the child not in a car seat.

How many people here actually know the child seat law in their state? Have you looked it up? Here in FL, it's 4 years old and younger need to be in a car seat.

Proportional reasoning and perspective can be applied to many things.

Amazing how so many younger people have been brainwashed by over zealous media with their personal agendas. Study the studies by Dr. Bandura, influence strategies, and entertainment education.... Hollywood is very familiar with his work and has manipulated society... this is how they got abortion forced on us.

To think that I'm saying that nothing is wrong with children out of a car seat, is a complete distortion of what has been written... children should be in a car seat, but to treat it like they're killing their kids for not having a car seat is ridiculous, unreasonable, and uncharitable. You have no idea what is going on in those people's lives, having a child taken away over one trip without a car seat is just evil.

Of course people need to have their young children in car seats... but if they don't, calling the cops about it is like calling the cops over someone driving 5 mph over the limit.

...and a child not in a car seat is not a serious danger... unless the child is crawling all over the car.

Nihil Obstat

I don't know if anyone realizes, but children being improperly secured in a car is one of not very many traffic violations that most police have zero tolerance for.

Yea, throwing a cigarette butt out the window often has a higher fine ($1200 in Calgary), but it's very much up to the discretion of the officer. In many cases they won't issue a ticket if you're not being a smart @$$, and if you're not doing anything else wrong. If there are children not strapped in properly though, they're going to nail you.
My real concern of that day is the fact that unsecured children add to global warming.
I've decided that from now on I'm just going to strap my kids to the luggage rack on the roof of my car with a bungee cord. That's safe, right? :saint:
