By folk music we mean Western folky type, with jangly acoustic guitars and (usually) rather upbeat, sappy, uninspiring music.
A lot of people will tell you that this type of music is entirely lacking in reverence towards the Mass.

I actually don't know what that refers to.
AFAIK though, when we talk about folk music, we're talking about Western folk. Think campfire with an acoustic guitar at summer camp out in the sticks.
