Liturgical Abuse

My old school used to get the girls involved in the Mass by having them dance infront of the altar.
The worst would probably have to be a month ago though. I was walking around a new town and noticed a beautiful church on the corner. It was a saturday night so I figured they would be having a Mass soon. Sure enough, Mass was scheduled to begin in 20 minutes.

I'm kneeling down trying to put myself in the right frame of mind for Mass and theres this extremely annoying old man a few pews behind me. He's laughing away with some other members of the congregation, making jokes, walking around without genuflecting. The Mass starts and the same man is at the altar! It turns out he's the priest.
The Mass was horrible. He left out any reference to anything slightly Catholic. Holy Spirit became "spirit", eternal life became "the fullness of life", Communion became "Eucharistic Banquet", he chose a different gospel reading than prescribed because "John is too theological and heavy" he explained, the penitential rite was completely omitted and he started Mass off by going around the Church greeting everyone and encouraged us to do the same.

What about you guys?

Nihil Obstat

I made a thread like this a few months ago. It wasn't entirely advisable, looking back, and it got locked. :)
Unfortunately we all just end up complaining and being uncharitable, even if that's not the idea going into it.

Probably at a youth retreat when a bread roll from a bakery was passed around and each person tore a piece off, I can't remember if it was already consecrated or consecrated while we were holding the piece...

Confession in included in liturgury. General absolution services with about 1000 people attending would be on the top of my list. Yes dance at Mass as well. Fortunately our new Archbishop has banned General Absolution services now and confession seems to be on the upswing. At least in our parish.

Since becoming Eastern Catholic I haven't really witnessed too many liturgical abuses.

I visited the Holy Virgin Russian Orthodox Cathedral in San Francisco on Saturday and there were no liturgical abuses at all in the Metropolitan's hierarchical liturgy.

I guess I've been lucky, I haven't really witnessed any that I can think of.

Is reading announcements at the ambo a liturgical abuse? We do have a separate podium for announcements... :idontknow:

The worst I have seen are invalid Masses where incorrect words or improper elements are used for the Eucharistic liturgy. I was also witness once to an extraordinary minister telling a bishop from another country to get out of his way at the altar because the bishop clearly "didn't know what he was doing." That is the only time my jaw has ever hit the floor at Mass.

I am very blessed with what I have. It is never perfect or how I would like it to be, but I still am able to participate in a valid Mass. I really have nothing to complain about. I suppose I am lucky. I have my gripes, but there is little I can do. I only pray that my parish will come to adore and worship than because they have to.
Cardinal Arinze says liturgical dance is perfectly fine and should even be encouraged.
Sorry, but unless he is talking about a place where it is part of the culture, I do not believe it.

Yes, I doubt he has encouraged "liturgical dance" in Western countries.
