Catholicism has all the cool things: monks, old books, obscure saints.

The Anglican church down the street has all the stuff you mentioned, and often cherish it more than the Catholic church in town.

What Catholics do have is the life long certainty of knowing they're right. You can't get that anywhere else.

I don't think it is that they have all the "cool" people at all. I think it is because several people have come to Caholicism through finding a relationship with God in the protestant Churches. That doesn't mean that they stay protestant. They are just on a different place in their walk of faith.

Here is 47 pages of Catholic celebrities. http://www.whosdatedwho.com/celebrities/pe...igion&ID=24

(I am not suggesting they are all "good" Catholics by they way, simply pointing out that the Catholic faith is the one they are associated with)

That is not what I meant.. We don't breakdown christianity to narrow little groups to target, as if a focus group directs the Churchs activities. There are now bibles for boys and bibles for girls, and teens and old people etc. We don't need to cater to each group as if they are not capable as functioning as part of the whole church.
A target audience is a selected group that you want to sell to. Christianity is for everyone and the Church is universal. We don't do youth groups, and parish ministries to sell Jesus, we do it to fill the commandment of love, and conversions happen in the process.
Okay, my favorite band in the world is Korn. Brian "Head" Welch became a Christian several years ago. Fieldy also became a Christian a few years ago. Also, A lot of the popular Christian music and awesome study Bibles are protestant. This has at times made me want to just be a "non-denominational" Christian. But, of course, I know that the Catholic Church is the TRUE Church. And of course, now that I've found this site, I've found some great music! But what about the celebs and cool Bibles and whatnot?
A few years ago, I had similar thoughts, as adjusting culturally to Catholicism was a whole separate deal from the intellectual and spiritual transition. The primary difference that I see is Evangelicalism has a very entrepreneurial spirit with church plants, emphasis on church growth, raising up ministries and leaders, and simply working hard to bring people into Church and deeper into relationship with God and neighbor. My former church community didn't even exist ten years ago and today they have over 1,000 people attending four services each Sunday with a second site opening soon in another part of the city. Numbers aren't everything, but one they do reveal is that everyone employed by this church wouldn't have a job if they church wasn't growing.

Now, contrast that with the Catholic side of river: the people "in charge" of ministries and evangelism tend to have cushy positions with no real risk that they could be out of a job if results don't justify their salary. The entrepreneurial excitement and energy isn't there. And before writing off too close of an association between capitalism and Christianity, do we not see something of an entrepreneurial zeal in people like St. Francis of Assisi, St. Francis Xavier, Blessed Junipero Serra, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, and of course, St. Paul?

On the other hand, it is interesting to see how tradition is becoming the "cool" in Evangelicalism. I was checking out the web site of Mars Hill Church in Seattle the other day and found it interesting that promote praying the divine office, lectio divina, and reading great books like "Imitation of Christ." Catholicism carries a sense of permanence and mysticism, not to mention an undeniable history of great works of literature and theology, that among a group of Evangelicals, the token Catholic become "cool" simply by association ;)

This is easily solved in two ways:

1. Pray for more.

2. Get involved in what you feel inspired to get involved in.

"Cool" celebrities in the Church do not create youth groups. People who go to church create youth groups. And I don't mean to pee on the parade or anything, but many protestant churches that I know of struggle with these areas also. The ones that have the huge successful youth groups are few and far between, and many times (not all) those groups are not focused on helping the elderly (that isn't 'cool' enough to attract teens), or in depth bible studies.

The grass may seem greener on the other side, but it is just marketed better sometimes. When you get over there, some of that green is simply food coloring.

Because the Catholic Church is not into "utility". She is concerned with the higher spiritual things. As St. John Vianney says, "The eyes of the world see no further than this life, but the eyes of the Christian see deep into eternity."

How many protestants get to read cool stories bout saints from the Early Church to present! Poor Protestants-they only have a mere 500 years of history! :ohno: Though we as catholics - we have 2,000 years and counting.

Not to mention our Lovely Mother~
