Nihil Obstat
I just ordered Against Those Unwilling to Confess that the Holy Virgin Is Theotokos by Patriarch St. Cyril of Alexandria, as part of my summer reading. I remember a discussion on Phatmass a while ago where someone said that "mother of God" is an imperfect translation of the term Theotokos. I figured it would be a good idea to have as clear an idea as I can about the theology behind the word before I start reading the book. Can anyone help me out? Theoketos
More literally Theotokos means "God bearer." The title comes from the fact that Christ flesh comes from Mary. And she is Mother Jesus who is true God and true man. Mary contained and bore in her whom that which the universe could not contain.
