Oh Man This Is A Can Of Worms...

I'm so setting myself up to get really irritated as my opinion is already formed on the topic, but I'm curious to see what you guys think. :detective:

What are your thoughts on nudity in art? Not sexually suggestive, but tasteful nudity. I'm including both full nudity and nudity with tasteful drapery or whatnot.

Also do you think there is a difference between mediums? E.G. Sculpting vs painting vs photography etc?

We need to stop being so ashamed of what God has made, but we cannot also look at in with a perverted mind frame. Nudity is fine. There has been some contemporary stuff that I am little uneasy with just because the art world now-a-days is pushing the envelope of decency and dignity. Some stuff is downright pornographic. I just wonder what the next movement in art is going to be.

Some of my favorite art pieces are nudes, or semi-nudes. I think that the human body is magnificent and there is nothing wrong with appreciating the human form. Now, that is to distinguish between art and pornography, or stuff that uses nudity to incite prurient interests. However, nudity does not equal sex.

One piece that I have in my own home is "Apres le bain" by Degas...it is a semi-nude of a woman seated, toweling herself off after a bath (hence the name). I love it because the lines of the back, the colors he uses in the composition, are simply exquisite. Absolutely nothing sexual about it at all.

Humans are lovely creatures created in God's image. Nothing wrong with appreciating that in a healthy, non-sexual way.

I thought it was hilarious that they put drapes over some of the nudes in the Sistine Chapel. I don't have issues with sculpture or painting, but am uncomfortable with photos.

I enjoy nude art/photography. Not so interested the more sexual nudity but it depends on the subject matter and how the piece is executed, composition, ect.

I think nudity in art is fine as long as it's tasteful. I like Michelangelo's "Creation" painting in the Sistine Chapel of God and Adam. :)

As long as it does not violate prudence, nudity is fine, especially in sacred art. It is the misuse of the human body that is a sin (such as in pornography).

I do understand that sometimes any form of nudity is a temptation. If someone found this to be a problem, then it could be an occasion of sin. But usually, that's pretty rare. The only thing I find to be a problem outside of pornography is naturism. Art...nah. ;)

Naturism is a bizarre situation.[/quote]

I wholeheartedly agree. ;)

Yet somehow I'm not suprised. I mean let's be honest. You never were of the highest caliber of character. :ohno:

Slightly off topic, but...

I don't like how Michelangelo depicted our Lord and the saints as being mostly nude in the Last Judgment. Obviously I can understand why our Lord would be depicted as mostly nude in a painting of His crucifixion or in when depicted as an infant, but I don't see what the purpose of depicting Him as mostly nude in a painting of the Last Judgment is. Similarly, I can see why St. Peter would be depicted as mostly nude in a painting of his martyrdom, but I don't understand why someone painting the general judgment would depict St. Peter as mostly naked.

Why would people in heaven need clothes?
