An Old School Catholic Message Board

I had originally made this thread in the Lame Board, which I now see was probably not the wisest place to make a thread that one does not want hijacked.

I made this thread because I know of nothing more annoying that having once heard a quote I like and later vaguely recalling it but being unable to remember the exact wording or source of the quote.
I'm going to start with this one:

"Quem caeli capere non poterant, tuo gremio contulisti." (1962 Roman Breviary, Matins for the Feast of the Annunciation)
"Him Whom the heavens could not contain, you did carry in your womb."

This Eastern icon has the same message as the prayer from the Roman Breviary:

So, is this a thread for your random theological quotes, or a thread you started where we can all post our random theological quotes? Just checking. You never know. :) I too often know what you mean, though. I was just thinking about one earlier that I could only vaguely remember, and I know I didn't save it anywhere. Something about...um...hm. Nope, rawr, I don't remember at all.

I originally made this thread for myself, but feel free to add any quotes that you would like. :)

"You would like to attain faith, and do not know the way; you would like to cure yourself of unbelief, and ask the remedy for it. Learn of those who have been bound like you, and who now stake all their possessions. These are people who know the way which you would follow, and who are cured of an ill of which you would be cured. Follow the way by which they began; by acting as if they believed, bless yourself with holy water, have Masses said, and so on; by a simple and natural process this will make you believe, and will dull you—will quiet your proudly critical intellect" (Blaise Pascal, Pensées, 233)

Do not wish greatly to be freed from tests; a soldier needs to have achieved a great deal in war before he desires its end. We shall never gain perfect sweetness or charity unless we exercise it amidst repugnance, aversion and disgust.

Persevere to the end in your faith in, and your love for, Jesus Christ. Here is the beginning and the end of life: faith is the beginning, the end is love; and when the two blend perfectly with each other, they are God.

For such is the power of great minds, such the light of truly believing souls, that they put unhesitating faith in what is not seen with the bodily eye; they fix their desires on what is beyond sight. Such fidelity could never be born in our hearts, nor could anyone be justified by faith, if our salvation lay only in what was visible. And so our Redeemer's visible presence has passed into the sacraments. Our faith is nobler and stronger because sight has been replaced by a doctrine whose authority is accepted by believing hearts, enlightened from on high. This faith was increased by the Lord's ascension and strengthened by the gift of the Spirit; it would remain unshaken by fetters and imprisonment, exile and hunger, fire and ravening beasts, and the most refined tortures ever devised by brutal persecutors. Throughout the world women no less than men, tender girls as well as boys, have given their life's blood in the struggle for this faith. It is a faith that has driven out devils, healed the sick and raised the dead.

Pope St. Leo the Great

"What merit, then, has man before grace which could make it possible for him to receive grace, when nothing but grace produces good merit in us; and what else but His gifts does God crown when He crowns our merits?"

"Make an effort, then, to meet more frequently to celebrate God's Eucharist and to offer praise. For, when you meet frequently in the same place, the forces of Satan are overthrown, and his baneful influence is neutralized by the unanimity of your faith. Peace is a precious thing: it puts an end to every war waged by heavenly or earthly enemies."

St. Ignatios of Antioch (+ A.D. 107)

"Beloved, our Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Creator of all things, today became our Savior by being born of a mother. Of His own will He was born for us today, in time, so that He could lead us to His Father's eternity. God became man so that man might become God. The Lord of the angels became man today so that man could eat the bread of angels."

You guys are posting some great quotes. I would just like to ask that you not only put the name of the person who wrote or said the quote, but that you also say the work and the page or paragraph number. Thank you! :)

What then? Do not we offer every day? We offer indeed, but making a remembrance of His death, and this sacrifice is one and not many.

How is it one, and not many? Inasmuch as that sacrifice was once for all offered, and carried into the Holy of Holies.

This rite is a figure of that sacrifice and this sacrifice of that. For we always offer the same Person, not one sheep now and tomorrow another, but ever the same: so that the sacrifice is one.

Since by this reasoning, inasmuch as the offering is made in many places, are there many Christs? God forbid; but Christ is one every where, being complete here and complete there also, one Body.

Just then as while offered in many places, He is one Body and not many bodies; so also is there one sacrifice. He is our High Priest, who offered the sacrifice that cleanses us. That sacrifice we offer now also, which was then offered, which cannot be exhausted. This is done in remembrance of what was then done. For, saith He, 'Do this in remembrance of Me.' It is not another sacrifice that we offer, as the High Priest of old did, but always the same, or rather we perform a remembrance of a sacrifice.
