A Canadian Catholic film crew has produced a television special on the life and inspiration of Blessed Mary MacKillop.

Salt + Light Television screened the broadcast on Saturday and it’s now available online.

“Mary MacKillop: Australia’s First Saint” was recorded during World Youth Day celebrations in Sydney.

Attending World Youth Day, Salt + Light producers Mary Rose Bacani and Kris Dmytrenko, followed in the footsteps of Blessed Mary MacKillop with the intention of sharing her story through film.

Her story includes the great legacy of Australia’s Catholic Education system, the founding of the Sisters of St Joseph and even an excommunication by the local bishop who later reversed his mistake.

The producers spoke with the Archbishop of Adelaide, Archbishop Philip Wilson; the former Auxiliary Bishop of Adelaide, Bishop Gregory O’Kelly; a few Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart; and young people who have felt the impact of Blessed Mary MacKillop on their lives.

“She is our star, but she’s our star by the quality of her ability to love, and her ability to forgive, and to trust God and move ahead,” Archbishop of Adelaide, Philip Wilson, said.

“She’s a star because she used every piece of human talent and ability that she had to get on with her work and to remain faithful to that work even in the midst of great difficulty.”
