princessgianna
And so what! Japanese sounds cooler. And awesome! And therefore perfect for this relationship. Maybe it would be easier for Era and this young lady to both learn Japanese than Spanish and English. Maybe just maybe....

Maybe just maybe.... [/quote] That would be insanely convoluted. Japanese is amongst the most difficult of all languages to learn for English speakers, as classified by the Foreign Services Institute (a branch of the Department of Defense). On the other hand, Spanish is one of the easiest. http://web.archive.org/web/20071014005901/http://www.nvtc.gov/lotw/months/november/learningExpectations.html
littleflower+JMJ
This is so cute! This isn't just any phone call...its an international call! I also know how hard it is to carry a conversation in spanish when you are not fluent. Happens to me all the time with family. I"m sure if you brush up and practice, spanish would be the ideal thing to learn. Writing is good but I would check to see how long it took to get there and back. Dave
Sorry to be a killjoy here, but I was raised to believe that it's the guy who's supposed to call the girl -- at least in the beginning. Alright, I admit it -- I'm hopelessly old-fashioned!

But it's hard to tell how interested someone is when they don't speak your language, so I decided that I won't take any more initiative unless she calls me. Which is what happened yesterday. Lilllabettt
I just want to say that the idea of a guy learning a foreign language so he can talk to a girl is very, very romantic. And the whole situation is very "meet-cute."

CatherineM
I'm glad my foreign corespondent was from the English speaking part of Canada, because my French went when I lost my Spanish.

Era Might
I got her address. I have the first letter written, now I just need to translate it. But I have a question: does anyone know how letters from outside the United States need to be addressed (for when she writes back)? Does she just need to put the normal address like we would if sending within the United States? Or does she need to put something extra (e.g., the name of the country)? I've never received mail from outside the United States, so I don't know how it works.

The thing would be she'd have to get a stamp that will pay for the trip to the US. Obviously it wouldn't be the same as mailing a national or local letter. Name of the Country would help. CatherineM
Underneath your state zip code line, she needs to write USA or United States. That and put the proper postage on it.
Era Might
Would anyone who speaks Spanish be willing to look over my translation? You don't need to correct it or anything, just make sure there are no major mistakes (like instead of saying "How are you" I say "The bug whistles in the moonlight").
