You must not watch what can temptyou or drag you towards this world and its empty love. Christian films however that is edifying to the soul and drags your thought to God can be good and edifying. How many times have you not realized whilst doing somethingworldly, that a kind of fire is starting to burn within you? How manytimes has this not happened whilst watching a film, or anime, orplaying a video game or doing something other worldly which you maybeshouldn't do? This fire is strange fire and is not from God but fromthe world and the devil. Those whom offer up strange fire before theLord will perish. Leviticus 10:1-2 " 1. And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron,took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incensethereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commandedthem not. 2 And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them,and they died before the LORD." Not only will worldly movies and series and video games make youcold in the love of God since God is not of this world, it will alsomake God feel less important for you, since you more strive for theworldly enjoyments, and after watching something worldly or after youhave played video games, you might even feel ashamed of God and tospeak of God, and even the thought of God may make you feel awkward.This is justice, since you more find pleasure in what will pass, and,because you more embrace sin and more care of your own will then tofollow God's will saving souls. For none that waste his time on earthon worldly vanities will see God! There is a reason why all saintscompletely renounce everything that was from the world. They often glorify vices and put down virtues. Some are simply intellectual voids that simply numb the mind. However, evaluating a movie is not as clear cut as you make it out to be. There are many many films (and tv series) that are not specifically Catholic or Christian that are worth watching. It's called good art. There are also some specifically Catholic or Christian movies that fail as movies. That's called bad art. An analogue would be non-Christian philosophy. Just because it came from a non-Christian doesn't mean it's necessarily false. St. Thomas Aquinas quoted extensively from Aristotle, who was Pagan. Aquinas is one of the most celebrated Catholic philosophers ever. Back to movies, however. Schindler's List isn't a Christian movie. However, it is an amazing movie. It speaks to the dignity of the human person. On the other hand, the movie Therese was a horribly filmed movie, but it was Catholic. Furthermore, as humans, we need to have a balance between work and play. There is a time for everything under the sun. We psychologically need time that we are not being productive, whether that being productive is active prayer, work or exercise. We need downtime. There can be movies that arent strictly Catholic but can still be good or have Christian teachings behind them. But video games, I dont see too much fruit sprout from video games I personally am against them unless there instructive. Such as math games, war, science and so on. And he is right to say nobody reading and watching these things can expect to get to heaven. Jesus said to hate the world and what it offers and that satan is the prince of this world. Now hes not talking about earth hes talking aBOUT THE SPIRIT OF THIS WORLD I.E violence, sex, vulgar language, and so on. Lord of the rings series wouldnt fall into any of these categories because its all based off of and teaches Catholic philosophy. So please try to understand where Hietanen is coming from.
