Nihil Obstat
How can it be inconsisstent with being an atheist? Atheists are humans. Humans have innate morals. It's like having eyes. One can't help it.
So what compels you to follow this gut feeling? To you, isn't it just an evolutionary, pre-programmed response which exists in order to further the human race? Couldn't an atheist say that there's no inherent value to the individual to follow it or not? If morals are evolutionary in nature, then the only value they have is in furthering the human race. Inasmuch as it doesn't matter to a single individual if the human race persists after his or her death, then the single individual can, and should disregard any moral feelings and act only on what he or she believes will make him or her happiest.
Undeniably, those who willfully shut out God from their hearts and tryto dodge religious questions are not following the dictates of theirconsciences, and hence are not free of blame; yet believers themselvesfrequently bear some responsibility for this situation . . . To theextent that they [believers] neglect their own training in the faith,or teach erroneous doctrine, or are deficient in their religious, moral, or social life, they must be said to conceal rather than revealthe authentic face of God and religion. I base my entire life on a belief. It's centered around that belief. That belief is so important to me, it influences my choices and actions. You probably do the same. But I'm willing to guess that if someone put a gun to your head and asked you to renounce your atheism, you'd do it. So my Catholicism will always mean more to me than your atheism will to you One of the reasons that Christianity became so popular was because people were amazed by the early martyrs. Every time a martyr was put to death because (s)he refused to renounce their belief, hundreds would convert because of their example. You have no atheist martyrs
