stlmom Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 (edited) Wanted to highlight this 9 minute video describing the beginnings of a new womens monastery of the Eastern Catholic Rite. Sister Celeste, the elder of the two women who are founding the monastery, was a fully professed Sister of St. Basil the Great from Uniontown, PA (my hometown) until given permission recently to begin this undertaking. The younger woman was a former aspirant with Sister Celeste's original community. They came at the request of the local bishop and seem to have quite a bit of community support. Don't know yet if the garb they are wearing here will ultimately become their habit. One of the Sisters said that "Christ the Bridegroom" is going to be the name of their main monastery -- that's a pretty awesome name! (Although I'm not a fan of the "port wine" flavor... I tried it multiple times, but I guess it's an acquired taste. Or maybe I just needed a good coagulated milk to eat it with? ) One of the grandmothers of a Sister I know lives near them and each year while that Sister was in the formation house, she would sent us TONS of homemade jams/jellies! This is where I found my love of blueberry jam. Mmmmm... That talk is great, Anya! That's for posting it! I particularly appreciate the blue/orange diagram/explanation of the Eastern Church and Western Church.

They are under the Serbian Orthodox Church which is not in Communion with the Holy See. The girls not in habit are students at the Home School the nuns have. I have all their choral CDs which are beautiful. Pray for the unity of the Church. I hope to come to clarity in the next few months. My SD wants me to have more time with each community before I decide.

And if so... ...I guess I was thinking as myself in your situation, but I know I've never discerned with an Eastern Catholic order, yet I would think I might have a hard time getting used to it. Is it comparable to a N.O. English Catholic getting used to the T.L.M.? Are there any major differences or sacrifices for you as a Byzantine Catholic, if you were to enter a Latin Rite order?

[/quote] Yes, I am a Byzantine Rite Catholic as is my family. My spirituality and devotion is Eastern and I would miss the liturgical forms and some other cultural stuff. However the Lord does get to ask that.
