Mahoney 'watch' In L.a.? Days Numbered?

American Papist is going with a story that Cardinal Mahoney in LA is about to receive a "coadjutor bishop" who will succeed Mahoney when he retires. I have to say that I hope this does happen soon. Take a look at this picture:

What a throne! And the crucifix seems in the background and off to the side. At least that is the effect of the photo on me.
So what does a "coadjutor bishop" do? Is this similar to what happened to Hunthausen in Seattle?

No, it is not the same as happened in Seattle. Many bishops get a coadjutor as they approach retirement age. Similar to the practice in corporate America, it's basically to allow the new guy to come in and learn how things work by ministering alongside the current bishop, without having to be thrown into the deep end right away. Quite often the retirement does not come until years later.

I think there are angels crying over the L.A. Cathedral. I'm not surprised Mahoney has an opulent throne in that nihilist monstrosity.

Nothing says celestial liturgy quite like the intentional absence of right angles.

I just hope the aliens who built the tabernacle don't decide to come back and claim it.

And as far as I know, co-Adjutor Bishops more or less are there to learn the ropes and ins and outs of the diocese in the time leading up when the previous bishops retires.

That's a tabernacle?

That makes me want to cry. It looks like bad bric a brac from some off-brand home interior decorator company.

As Mahony is the target of a federal grand jury he may need a coadjutor and fast. Mahony has also indicated he has no plans to stay past his retirement age.
Coadjutors are indeed sometimes brought in during times of scandal for a diocese as happened in Dubuque in the 1940's. A similar situation occurred in Spain. The pope will define what the coadjutor's powers are, if in fact it happens. Sometimes the coadjutor is given full authority.

Whoa, is does seem kind of star wars like for a cathedral. Perhaps they are trying to win over the hollyweird types from the scientoligists, that would surely increase the tithe. That can not be a tabernacle, can it?

Despite the ugliness of the statue, the moon is in Marian imagery as well as Muslim imagery.
