I think ornamentation can get to be too much, you know, as a style. Baroque. It can get to be too much. Sometimes clean lines can be a breath of fresh air.
A lot of that baroque rococo stuff went too far in the other direction: way too garish and gaudy.

I think this picture frame crawled out of my bathtub drain:

Looking at these chairs is liable to give you an epileptic fit:

Some Victorian stuff was like that too--maybe it carried over. I'll bet this lampshade was a dust magnet:

Some Cistercian beauty that reminds me a bit of Our Lady of the Angels:

Perhaps under some circumstances and perhaps even in this one. But keep in mind this man is complicit in the abuse of children and might be the most harmful bishop in living memory in regard to catechesis and liturgy. Let us pray for him and speak only charity.

Eastern churches are very bright and colorful compared to traditional Western churches of the Gothic and Romanesque sort.

As Cardinal Ratzinger said in his book on the liturgy: "[The Western Church] must achieve a real reception of the Seventh Ecumenical Council, Nicaea II, which affirmed the fundamental importance and theological status of the image in the Church" [Joseph Ratzinger, Spirit of the Liturgy, page 134].

I think the difference between that sort of minimalism and a lot of the stuff you see nowadays is that there was more attention to symmetry, proportion, more curvature; it was more harmonious. Much of these new stuff seems to combine the blandness of Le Corbusier with a postmodern love of discordance. It just tries too hard to be artsy and symbolic, without real care for the atmospherics. Architecture doesn't need to be a philosophical statement.

Actually the Rood Screens of the West from the medieval period look a lot like the iconography of the Christian East.

You might be on to something, with modern design there is a lot more emphasis on hard angles... the attention to curves in some of the ancient buildings really softens the harshness of the austere design.

Yes the LA cathedral gives off an oppressive feeling. Even the ceiling appears to be moving down - as if crushing anyone inside the building.

I just hope the aliens who built the tabernacle don't decide to come back and claim it.

The cathedral did not make me want to puke, but making a tabernacle that looks like a bong is the last straw.

(But then again, it IS California....)

An Eastern Orthodox friend of mine found the tabernacle to be rather disgusting. I cannot say what he thinks it looks like because many would no doubt take offense.

Actually, it does have to make a philosophical statement. Even theological. Has to be the right one, though.

This is a beautiful Western Sanctuary:

I've gotten the impression that Western Medieval churches are comparatively dark and somber, but of course they used to be painted. Perhaps it's more because the Eastern churched were better maintained. Also, much of my experience comes from Gothic Revival churches, from movies, etc, which play on the dark look. Take New York City's St. Patrick's Cathedral:

There's some color but not compared to the pictures you posted.

I also think a big, big problem with most modern architecture is the extra-bright, fluorescent lighting. Couples with the minimalism, straight lines, etc, it gives the place the atmospherics of an operating room.

These are two different pictures of the same holy temple. I have been inside and the darker picture is how it looks normally. Perhaps the lighting was changed for the second picture in order to make the icons more visible.
