Totus Tuus
I would argue that not working out in some way is a sin, because it's necessary for taking care of our bodies. Vanity can be occasioned by tons of things, not just working out. I would also argue that aggression is not necessarily a bad thing. In reference to being... hormonal... I would suggest that perhaps you haven't found the right gym for you? It may sound crazy, but in my experience some gyms have an all-around different attitude. I prefer working out at YMCAs, which generally have gyms just as good as any LA Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, etc., but don't have the "I'm here because I'm hot and you know it" attitude. And I don't buy the "if you're in there to increase performance you don't pay attention to yourself" argument. I've been performance training since grade 8.
I don't think it's necessarily a problem to be looking at yourself in the gym. Personally, I run the treadmills and am trying to get back into running races, so I give myself a glance now and then in the mirror to see if I'm slouching, too red in the face (if I don't see it I won't slow myself down), etc. If you're training with a specific goal there's nothing wrong with inspecting yourself now and then to see how far you've come, but if it's to compare how good or bad you look to the person next to you, that could be a problem. Also, the only time I can get to the gym is about six o'clock in the evening, and it's bustling. My solution is to bring my iPod and a magazine with me so that depending on what machine I'm using, I'm happily distracted from staring at others and the clock.
I've been unable to work out for four months because of injuries and I miss it very much.
I'm sorry you're hurt. I hope you have a smooth recovery and are able to get back to working out soon!
Good points, I've often wondered to myself if a Christian can justify being overweight. A. Our body is a temple. B. We must refrain from gluttony. C. It is always good to exercise will power.
Sometimes one's weight cannot be helped, but if we're doing what we can to keep our ourselves active and healthy, this should be what matters.
I saw this on a local site and thought it relevant for this thread:
Jesus bears a slight semblance to Silent Bob here.
looking at yourself and your muscles when you workout is no different then looking at yourself in the mirror when your getting ready to go out. there is no difference between ones face and ones body. making one look good is not more important and less sinful than the other. KeenanParkerII
Some of these are painfully familiar (sliding the weights off the barbell on benchpress
lol I did the same thing in grade 11. The gym was situated directly across from a full set of bleachers full of people at a swim meet. Sooo embarasing lol. I don't consider that bad. What's bad is the guy that goes into the gym and lifts his shirt up every minute to "inspect his abs" or the girl who makes sure she's doing squats right in the middle of the guys weight room. Winchester
Another sin is not reracking weights or wiping down the equipment. There oughta be a right to taser those morons. And the idiots who throw their weights down. if you aren't strong enough to set them back down in a controlled manner, you're not strong enough to be lifting them in the first place.
