Personally, I have a LOT of respect for a guy who takes responsibility for carrying his own stuff, instead of saying, "Honey, can you carry my [insert "sunglasses, camera, guidebook", or any other item here]?"

Long live the satchel! May it grow ever larger!

I'm not sure exactly why you posted this larger picture (well, except that MIKolbe told you to), which is, of course, the best of all reasons. But, it made clear that the satchel is actually larger than it appears in the Avatar, and might almost be large enough to prevent the "Honey, will you carry this?" syndrome. However, I have a purse roughly this size that I take with me when I want to travel "light," and it still isn't large enough for everyday use when I need to carry all the things I consider "essential for survival" when leaving my home to venture into the "wilds of suburbia." I wonder if this need to "carry everything that you might possibly need" is an X chromosome thing. In my case, at least, it backfires anyway, because inevitably I forget to bring the one thing I really needed.

The whole business of carrying "everything you might possibly ever need" is magnified 100 times when the baby arrives. And, in that case, it's not just some "feminine quirk" but a real need for to have all the baby's "stuff"close at hand. So, I respect even more the men who do not consider it "unmasculine" to lug the baby's carryall. And, if the husband expands this to actually carry the baby, for example, in a baby carrier or backpack, they earn an "Awwww, what a great husband" from me.

Of course, women carry both the baby AND all the baby's stuff on a daily basis, and don't get the same "Awwww." This is patently unfair, but I am still going to give the husband an "Awwww" as a means of further encouraging this behavior among fathers.

When young single guys carry around a huge load of stuff, I assume the worst--drugs, explosives, costumes for a sci-fi fan convention, etc. And, if the young man happens to be leaving the college library, I assume he has found a way to hack the security system and is stealing books to put him ahead of the other students in his classes. No one said life is fair.

In my experience, yes, men carry a lot of their stuff in their pockets. Since most women's clothes don't have useable pockets, or any pockets at all, women need need some kind of purse, or purse substitute, like a backpack or briefcase.

I think that, in general, men feel less need to carry stuff than women do. But, this may change over the next generation or two. Nowadays, kids (of both genders) have backpacks almost as soon as they can walk, and after that carry briefcases, lunch boxes, tool boxes etc, or men have their wives carry their stuff for them--it's rare that it happens the other way around, except perhaps if a woman is wearing a skintight, skimpy evening dress.

That, plus we don't carry much.
I always have keys, a wallet, a pocketknife/multitool, and a cell phone. That's four pockets. If I have sunglasses I hook them on a belt loop.
