Any Others?

Not specifically for me! I am more attracted to the Monastic Spirituality (most especially Benedictine), but I have always had an equally soft spot for the Missionaries of Charity who were the first nuns I ever knew about (my mom has a signed picture of her).

Hey All

Was wondering if anyone else is thinking about becoming a missionary sister?
I think the church needs the missionaries so much!
One of the best missionary order I suggest to you is the Servants of the lord and the Virgin of Matarà but there are many others.
I encourage you to discern this vocation as it is very precious for the Church-

Not a foreign missionary (unless the order goes that way), but my sisters are doing mission work in the inner city!
I'm thinking about it, because the Little Sisters get to choose weather they would like to be a missionary or stay in the US.
Don't forget that there is much missionary work to be done in the US as well.

So true there is alot of work to do here in the US....... I thought Maryknoll was the order for me, but after talking to my Spiritual Director I was thinking what if it isn't for me, also there are so many orders out there. I feel my heart tugging on Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters

I'm considering a community that originated in Europe. They do missionary work in Africa and other continents. It's so strange because I NEVER considered becoming a missionary. I was adamant that it was not my calling, but the Holy Spirit seems to be saying otherwise. I'm supposed to see them again in the next few months and I cannot wait! I already met the Provincial Superior in the USA and we both think that I need to continue discernment with them. They are nurses and teachers. She already told me I could be a nurse in the order if I felt called to it. :)

@Joan:
Yes! I am attracted to life as a missionary sister. I spent a year+ in South America and I have been searching for communities with foreign/international missions. I'd love to find a USA-based community with outreach to Latin America.

Phatmass,
Any other suggestions of faithful, joyful missionary orders? I would appreciate any guidance. Thank you!

Seconding the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matara ( http://www.ssvmusa.org)
Also, it's a special vocation (as all are, but they are especially hardcore), but the Missionaries of Charity are amazing!!!

Would you mind sharing more of your thoughts on Maryknoll? I study the history of the order in China and I know some of the fathers working on the China mission now. They have changed quite a bit since their early years when they established missions in Guangdong and Guangxi provinces as well as Korea, Japan and the Philippines. Here are some images of the sisters from that time period.

I wish they would've kept those habits.

@Lisa:
Thank you! I emailed the SSVM to inquire about a "Come and See" Retreat in April. I appreciate their fourth vow and consecration to Mary. If possible, I am looking for traditional, habit-wearing communities. I am continuing to research communities and I have not ruled out the Missionaries of Charity. I worked with a few Missionaries of Charity when I attended university - beautiful, devoted women.

This is a really nice video showing the Maryknoll sisters working with refugees in Hong Kong in the 1950's & 60's. They were still wearing their distinctive grey habits which people in Hong Kong fondly remember to this day.

Okay, one more video and it is a good one, from the Missionary Sisters Servants of the Poor of the Third World.
