I was looking around and saw this topic which caught my attention...I am grieved to hear how open and freely you all think highly of a drink that destroys many lives and families...yeah I know it's the responsibilty of the person who drinks it...but it is addicting and when one is raised in an environment of alcoholism this substance has a great influence on their life...a very bad influence...unfortunately I know this by experience...alchohol is a horrible substance to drink and be under the influence of...don't fool yourself and say its ok to drink a little...that's a lie and a great deception...deep down inside you know you can't be filled with alchohol and the Holy Spirit...I will pray about this...I know what this does being an alcholic for 20 years of my life...

Please don't see this as a condemnation judgement but rather to bring a conviction on some of the things implied concerning drinking alchohol...and maybe even a prevention of making a life destroying decision...this may not imply to all but maybe to the some that may consider taking up the practice of social drinking...it's not an issue that can be taken lightly...
It is definitely not an issue to be taken lightly, so I applaud the posters openly talking about it. We don't see drinking alcohol in moderation as a problem:

"God give thee the dew of heaven, and of the fatness of the earth, abundance of corn and wine."
- Genesis 27,28

but drunkenness:

"Woe to you that rise up early in the morning to follow drunkenness, and to drink till the evening, to be inflamed with wine."
- Isaias 5,11

In fact in Isaias it calls wine the joy of the earth:
"There shall be a crying for wine in the streets: all mirth is forsaken: the joy of the earth is gone away."
- Isaias 24,11

and the Lord Himself orders it for a feast: "And the Lord of hosts shall make unto all people in this mountain, a feast of fat things, a feast of wine, of fat things full of marrow, of wine purified from the lees."
- Isaias 25,6

"In that day there shall be singing to the vineyard of pure wine."
- Isaias 27,2

"Go then, and eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with gladness: because thy works please God."
- Ecclesiastes 9,7
This is even more blunt:

"Wine was created from the beginning to make men joyful, and not to make them drunk."
- Ecclesiasticus 31,35

"Wine drunken with moderation is the joy of the soul and the heart."
- Ecclesiasticus 31,36

We also have to take care how our behavior influences others:
"It is good not to eat flesh, and not to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother is offended, or scandalized, or made weak."
- Romans 14,21

Alcohol is not a sin, but can lead one to sin by lack of moderation.
Some people can socially drink for a lifetime, some people are addicted at there first drink, so it is something to think about.

Some people are more likely to develop addiction to alcohol than others. I consider myself lucky that I do not suffer from addictive tendencies. I enjoy alcohol very much, but I can't stand drunkenness. I don't get drunk and I don't socialize with drunks.

I thought you said you were Spanish? Which one is it?! =P

But it's okay. I own my 97% German until I'm around Poles, then I own my 3% Polish, since I look like a Pole anyway.

But yes. Germans definitely enjoy the Biere. I can verify this.

All three mostly Spanish.
And that's how my archaeology got me in trouble. :| ah, Greek pottery clearly showing drunkenness. Never figured out how the Bible could condemn drunkenness if there wasn't real alcohol then. . .

... with the exception of alcoholics. Some people can't drink in moderation, so shouldn't drink at all.

There is an easy way how to know the Bible speaks of real wine and not grape juice. And that is this: every time wine is mentioned, someone gets hammered. In the Old Testament, Noah gets drunk, Lot's own daughters get him hammered, and even at the Wedding at Cana, the man notes how at weddings, they start with a superior wine, and then, once men have freely drunk, an inferior one. This is because (And anyone old enough to drink knows what I mean) once you start to feel the effects of drinking, you don't care what it tastes like, just that it says "alcohol" on it.

Despite my 100% German heritage, I'm not much of a beer drinker. *hears ancestors crying out in anguish*

That being said, I do enjoy sampling craft beers from time to time, especially if it's chocolate stout. I also have this weird trick of licking salt before drinking beer to cut down on some of the bitterness.

Drunk people can be funny for like the first 10 minutes or so.

After that it's annoying as hell.

Some don't become funny, but jump straight to annoying.

Is anyone here a homebrewer like me? I've made only a few batches, mostly of mead:

American Light pilsner
Honey Wheat Ale
Morat aka Mulberry Mead <--NE state fair award winning highest scoring mead
Cyser (Cider made with honey or Mead made with cider) <--currently ageing
Sweet Mead <-- just racked into secondary fermentor

I'm also planning to make a bock and doppelbock. Also, I would like to find a priest to do this for me:
V. Our help is in the name of the Lord.
R. Who made heaven and earth.
V. The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.
Let us pray.
Bless, + O Lord, this creature beer, which thou hast deigned to produce from the fat of grain: that it may be a salutary remedy to the human race, and grant through the invocation of thy holy name; that, whoever shall drink it, may gain health in body and peace in soul. Through Christ our Lord.
R. Amen.
The beer is then sprinkled with holy water.

Yes, that is an actual blessing. There's also one for wine:
On the feast of Saint John, Apostle and Evangelist (28 December)

Graciously bless and sanctify, O Lord God, this wine and this drink with Thy right hand, and grant that by the merits of Saint John, Apostle and Evangelist, all who believe in Thee and partake of this wine may be blessed and protected. And as Saint John drank poison from a cup and was unharmed, so may all those who this day drink of this cup in honor of Saint John be preserved from all poisoning and other harmful things, and as they offer themselves to Thee in body and soul may they be free of all guilt. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Bless, O Lord, this drink which Thou hast created, that it may be a salutary remedy for all who partake of it, and grant that all who taste of it may, by invoking Thy holy name, receive health for body and soul. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

And may the blessing of Almighty God, of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, come down upon this wine and any other drink, and remain forever. Amen.
