Novena To Mary Undo-er Of Knots - For Matermisericordiae

Those of us who have been on Vocation Station for a while are very aware that MaterMisericordiae has been waiting to learn whether or not the community he hopes to enter has decided to let her try her vocation or not. You can read the details on other threads.

As I looked at the 'waiting to hear from my community' thread, I found myself remembering the devotion to Mary Un-doer of Knots. A friend from my Secular Order community gave me a small picture of her as a wedding present, saying that she is the one who 'unties the knots' in new marriages. I loved the image, and I have ended up with great devotion to our Mother under this title.

Yesterday evening I suggested to MaterMisericordiae that we begin a novena to Our Lady, Un-doer of knots for Mater, not to try to influence her superiors, but to undo any knots that are in the way of Mater's following God's will for her.... to get her the graces she will need to follow God's path in a radically loving way.

Mater is very grateful for the idea... and a number of others have indicated support!

So.... this thread.

I will post a little about the devotion, and then each day I will post the novena prayers.

Traditionally this devotion is a Rosary Novena.... but there is also a version that does NOT include the full rosary. You may choose either option, and I will post both.

Thank you in advance for your prayers for Mater and for all those in Vocation Station who are feeling stuck in 'red tape' for lack of a better word.

Blessings,

AnneLine

How this devotion started?

Since 1700, his painting has been venerated in the Church of St. Peter in Perlack, Germany. It was originally inspired by a meditation of Saint Irenaeus (Bishop of Lyon and martyred in 202) based on the parallel made by Saint Paul between Adam and Christ. Saint Irenaeus, in turn, made a comparison between Eve and Mary, saying:

"Eve, by her disobedience, tied the knot of disgrace for the human race; whereas Mary, by her obedience, undid it".

But what are these knots?

They are the problems and struggles we face for which we do not see any solution.
.... the knots of our life!

Dearest Holy Mother, Most Holy Mary, you undo the knots that suffocate your children, extend your merciful hands to me. I entrust to You today this knot....and all the negative consequences that it provokes in my life. I give you this knot that torments me and makes me unhappy and so impedes me from uniting myself to You and Your Son Jesus, my Savior.

I run to You, Mary, Undoer of Knots because I trust you and I know that you never despise a sinning child who comes to ask you for help. I believe that you can undo this knot because Jesus grants you everything. I believe that you want to undo this knot because you are my Mother. I believe that You will do this because you love me with eternal love.

Thank you, Dear Mother.

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.

The one who seeks grace, finds it in Mary's hands.

PRAYER TO MARY, UNDOER OF KNOTS (Closing Prayer)

Virgin Mary, Mother of fair love, Mother who never refuses to come to the aid of a child in need, Mother whose hands never cease to serve your beloved children because they are moved by the divine love and immense mercy that exists in your heart, cast your compassionate eyes upon me and see the snarl of knots that exist in my life.
You know very well how desperate I am, my pain and how I am bound by these knots.

Mary, Mother to whom God entrusted the undoing of the knots in the lives of his children, I entrust into your hands the ribbon of my life.

No one, not even the Evil One himself, can take it away from your precious care. In your hands there is no knot that cannot be undone.

Powerful Mother, by your grace and intercessory power with Your Son and My Liberator, Jesus, take into your hands today this knot...I beg you to undo it for the glory of God, once for all, You are my hope.

O my Lady, you are the only consolation God gives me, the fortification of my feeble strength, the enrichment of my destitution and with Christ the freedom from my chains.

Hear my plea.

Keep me, guide me, protect me, o safe refuge!

Mary, Beloved Mother, channel of all grace, I return to You today my heart, recognizing that I am a sinner in need of your help. Many times I lose the graces you grant me because of my sins of egoism, pride, rancor and my lack of generosity and humility. I turn to You today, Mary, Undoer of knots, for You to ask your Son Jesus to grant me a pure, divested, humble and trusting heart. I will live today practicing these virtues and offering you this as a sign of my love for You. I entrust into Your hands this knot (...describe) which keeps me from reflecting the glory of God.

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.

I love it as well -- she has an honored place in our living room....and I know she has helped ot resolve some serious things that were keeping me from using my counseling gifts.... things that need to be acknowledged, unknotted, and let go.....

Mater, I shared this novena with the Secular who gave me the gift nearly 20 years ago last evening... and she will be praying for you -- and for all of our knotty problems -- as well.

Where to Turn When All Else Fails

I once heard one of my favorite theologians, the late Father John Hardon, say in one of his audiotape series that there are no coincidences in life — that everything happens for a reason. Consequently, when I was introduced to a new Marian devotion, I felt it was revealed to me at that time for a purpose.

I had been asking God and the Blessed Mother to help heal a rift between me and an extended family member. Per usual, I had allowed my all-too-quick tongue to say something that I hadn’t really meant to say — something an apology would not easily mend.

The devotion that came to my attention is called Mary, Undoer of Knots. When I first heard this unusual title for Mary I thought, like many of her titles, it was referring to an apparition site. A little research clarified that this devotion stemmed from an action of Mary, an action of her undoing or untying knots, not an apparition.

The “knots” in Our Lady’s title refer to anything that separates us from God and our fellow man. I immediately thought of the knot of division in my family that had been weighing heavily on my heart.

There is a beautiful image associated with the Mary, Undoer of Knots which especially drew me to this devotion. It’s a Baroque-style painting done in the 1700s by an unknown painter (though recently alleged to be painted by a German artist named Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner) depicting the Virgin Mary dressed resplendently in crimson and deep blue. In her hands is a knotted white ribbon, which she is serenely untying with the cooperation of two angels. Above her head is the approving and guiding presence of the Holy Spirit. Crushed under her feet is the head of the serpent with a coiled and knotted body. The painting is still housed in St. Peter Church in Perlach, Germany.

The artwork appears to have been based on a reference to the Blessed Virgin as the “untier” of knots by Saint Irenaeus. In his writings titled Adversus Haereses (Against Heresies), the Bishop contemplates Saint Paul’s parallel between Adam and Christ, comparing Eve and the Virgin Mary, saying:

“Eve, by her disobedience, tied the knot of disgrace for the human race; whereas Mary, by Her obedience, undid it…For what the virgin Eve had bound fast through unbelief, this did the Virgin Mary set free through faith.”

Spreading Devotion

Since 1998, devotion to Mary Undoer of Knots has spread through the work of Denis and Dr. Suzel Frem Bourgerie — particularly in South America. Dr. Bourgerie published a booklet titled Mary, Undoer of Knots Novena with nihil obstat and imprimatur. Later the couple founded the National Sanctuary of Mary Undoer of Knots in Campinas (Sao Paulo) Brazil. In 2006, the shrine was inaugurated.

In her booklet, Dr. Bourgerie’s writes about the knots each of us suffer. “How they suffocate the soul, beat us down, betray the heart’s joy and even the will to continue living.” She goes on to say: “… The Virgin Mary does not want this to continue anymore in your life. She comes to you today for you to give her all these snarls because she will undo them one by one.”
I’d like to say that after saying the Mary, Undoer of Knots Novena there was a miraculous mending of the familial rift, but it has actually been a much slower process. I am comforted knowing that I have turned over my problem to the most patient of knot untiers, Our Lady.

Meditating Mother, Queen of heaven, in whose hands the treasures of the King are found, turn your merciful eyes upon me today. I entrust into your holy hands this knot in my life...and allthe rancor and resentment it has caused in me. I ask Your forgiveness, God teh Father, for my sin. Help me now to forgive all the persons who consciously or unconsciously provoked this knot. Give me, also, the grace to forgive me for having provoked this knot. Only in this way can You undo it. Before You, dearest Mother, and in the name of Your Son Jesus, my Savior, who has suffered so many offenses, having been granted forgiveness, I now forgive these persons...and myself, forever. Thank you, Mary, Undoer of Knots for undoing the knot of rancor in my heart and the knot which I now present to you. Amen.

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.

Turn to Mary, you who desire grace.

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me

Dearest Holy Mother, you are generous with all who seek you, have mercy on me. I entrust into your hands this knot which robs the peace of my heart, paralyzes my soul and keeps me from going to my Lord and serving Him with my life.
Undo this knot in my love...., O mother, and ask Jesus to heal my paralytic faith which gets down hearted with the stones on the road. Along with you, dearest Mother, may I see these stones as friends. Not murmuring against them anymore but giving endless thanks for them, may I smile trustingly in your power.

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.
