I would love to find out how the poor clares of our lady of the angels monastery get there headpiece to be rectangular...square. Anyone have any ideas??? Thanks

It looks like their headpiece is very similar to the SMMC, and I know a little bit about how their "headgear" is constructed There is a little cap with a piece of lightweight plastic that creates the band across the forehead. Then in the veil itself there is another piece of plastic so it is stiff and makes that "rectangle" shape.

I often wonder how long it takes the PCPAs, Carmelites of the Sacred Heart, and the SMMCs to get used to the tight wimple around their neck. I have a real issue with turtlenecks because I have always had a sensitive neck area and it feels like they are choking me. I hated when people touched my neck as a kid. I don't know if I could get used to always having something over my neck unless it was loose like the Carmelites or Poor Clare Colettines. :)

The PCCA's have 3-4 snaps on the top of their headgear that attaches the veil. Of course, the veil has the corresponding snaps on it as well And yes, I know this to be a fact as I asked one of my friends who is a PCCA in Charlotte about it and she promptly unsnapped and reshaped part of her veil to show me. Nifty, huh?

I have no clue about other Poor Clares, since their habits tend to differ slightly, but the Roswell PCCs wimple is tight around their neck! Their bib/kerchief is nice and loose though. I only know this because of a story where a novice was clothed and she said that she felt really constricted by the headgear for a few days after the investiture! I hear you get pretty attached to the feeling of having your head and neck 'cuddled' after a while though. :P

LOL, I honestly thought the PCCs wimple was loose. I'm pretty sure the Discalced Carmelites have a loose one.

Not quite sure what you mean about loose. The toque is one piece that goes over the head and under the chin and has an opening at the back of the head that is either fastened with tapes (as in the days of Teresa of the Andes) or straight pins or even nowadays with velcro. Under the chin there is also sometimes an opening that is held together using a straight pin, but some nuns choose to have this sewed up. Mine had a pin but it drove me nuts when it would go loose (and sometimes stab me) so next time I am going to have it sewed up. Some nuns prefer it with the pin so they can adjust the tightness under the chin though.

I don't like turtlenecks either but that is because they are usually too tight for me. The toque was a little bit strange to wear at first, but it does become something that embraces one, like the whole habit does. And taking it off, the head feels naked.
