Man, this is a most excellent thread.

What about the pope being more clear on issues? For example, someone mentioned the "5 non-negotiables", and I've seen these "non-negotiables" in Catholic "voter guides" in various places... yet, I've never actually read anything from the pope or from the church for that matter that make it seem so clear-cut as these guides try to make it. Would it be good for the pope to come out and make certain issues more black and white for the modern day dumbed down public?

No, what you need are more old-school nuns who know how to wield rulers like kali sticks being clear on issues.

Then why were Ayn Rand's philosophies condemned, out of curiosity? I don't know much about her, just that she wrote Atlas Shrugged and her name is weird and everyone has a different way to pronounce it.

I believe it rhymes with nine.

That is what Wikipedia's IPA transcription says.

"Pope Benedict Urges Americans to Vote for Romney"

Would we ever see a headline like this? Has a pope ever gotten involved in an American election, or other elections? Why or why not?

Let's keep politics out of it. I want to talk about the pope's role and/or involvement in worldy politics.

wouldn't that would be like "Obama Urging Catholic's to Vote for the next (unnamed) Pope " ? The president doesn't have  , unlike the Pope.

i guess it could happen when :pigsfly:

Possibly, if there were a substantial difference between candidates.

The Pope is just a man. The negative power of being prevented from teaching errors about the faith would not keep him from making bone-headed statements supporting politicians. The typical pope is not bone-headed, though. Some have been remarkably evil, but that's just evidence of God's protection of the Church.

The Pope isn't the only source of moral authority, even if he is the greatest ecclesial authority.

However, I'm not sure what you mean by "be more clear." The Pope doesn't live in the same sort of democratic society that we do, and not all countries are republics. That doesn't mean that they haven't spoken out on such issues. Pope John Paul II said in Veritatis splendor:

Again he said in Evangelium vitae:

I don't think it's a matter of them not saying enough; oftentimes the Popes say so much that people don't heed what has already come before. The bishops have the responsibility to make this clear to their faithful, just as the Holy Father does. In fact, when your bishop (sadly I know you have none right now) speaks out, you are required to heed him similarly to how you should heed the Pope.

Ash Wednesday

Does someone mean to tell me that Catholics would actually listen to the pope?

The ones that WOULD actually listen and heed his statements tend to vote conservatively, anyway. "Progressive Catholics" hold Obama and their "conscience" much more nearer and dearer in their hearts than they do the pope.
