Why not just describe yourself as an extreme libertarian rather than trying to morph the traditional meaning of 'anarchism' and 'capitalism'? That's not intended to be a sleight. I'm also not convinced that in the socio-economic system you and Winchester adhere too that monopoly would be prevented from developing as I think Nozick has argued pretty well. But I guess that's for another thread.

I have not described myself as an anarcho-capitalist for some time now. I have indicated on a couple occasions that it is "close enough", but I generally also say that I do not personally use the label.
I am currently avoiding using the anarchist label for myself until I have had a chance to study the foundations of philosophical anarchism so that I can piece together a coherent argument one way or the other.

I am relatively okay with this characterization, as Chesterton said, the problem of Capitalism is not too many capitalists, but too few. it's certainly a bit more than that, but it would all depend on your definition of capitalism.

If that truly defines the distributist position, then I am fine with it too. :smile3:

It is altogether much more radical than that, but also much more opposed to socialism :cyclops: it's hard to pin down for those who are too used to the usual binaries. there are of course overlaps in everything, but I don't think it's quite fair to characterize it as being any kind of socialism, is is very much opposed to socialism actually.

I know it says to be opposed to socialism. And it seems to be certainly divorced from the 'scientific socialism' of the time and the social elements of the Utopian programs but in terms of piratical policy programs it seems more or less exactly what you'd expect from a 19th century Dem Soc party. I agree that it is very much an anti-socialist party in terms of theory and vision of a normative political arrangement but practically I don't see any real difference other than, I would assume, some social positions

You keep trying to get people to look at your facebook page. I suspect some sort of trap.

amesome. I seem to have provided yet another avenue for debating the use of the word, "anarchist". Anyhow, thanks to those who provided links and whatnot.

I just checked out a book by Heinrich Pesch from the library here called Free Market or Economic Order... it looks like a pretty amesome read. The challenge will be trying to work it into a paper because I really don't have time for idle reading... I'm working something out though, throwing in some Max Weber and some Muslims and probably a bit of Congo and some Latin America... oh man, I'm actually creating lots of extra work for myself....

Not The Philosopher

At least half of the knowledge I gleaned from university was from reading stuff which was not on the reading list or which had nothing to do with my classes at all. And I turned out OK. Kind of.

haha yeah I was like that through my undergraduate. right now I have 3 15-20 page papers to write and one 5-10 page paper... which amounts to 50-70 pages worth of writing. and I keep committing myself to topics that involve drawing in a bunch of unrelated sources from all over the place, meaning lots of reading and note-taking on top of the piles and piles of stuff I must read for exams. I complain, but I actually do love that I'm getting challenged (or buried, that might be a better word for it--buried).

The idea of writing that much both scares me, and really excites me.  What are you studying?

Getting a Masters of Science in Anthropology at KU Leuven in Belgium.

It's a lot of writing and a lot of reading and researching at this point, in some ways prepping for being able to do field notes and be able to interpret them and such.  It is exciting and terrifying to have so much to do though lol.

ooooo what are you going to read about Latin America. I'm currently reading book about mexico called "Mexico: A Biography of Power"...a good overview of Mexican history since 1810. Another good one I read a while back is "To Lead As Equals" about the campesinos during the Nicaraguan revolution in 1979...might be somewhat up your anthropology alley.
