Kiev Is Under Revolution

After some time of peace, the Ukrainian parliament came to a stalemate, and today the people came and surrounded parliament, thus causing police to come. Violence ensued, hundreds of people are injured, and at least 9 people are confirmed dead, including 2 police officers. There is a very large and long fire in front of parliament that the protestors are rallying near.

Police started firing at the crowds with rubber bullets and stun grenades on the protestors, and the protestors began throwing rubble and bricks back, and even some Molotov cocktails.

From what I have heard, the police have not been using stun grenades, they're using real anti-personnel grenades. And they are using live ammunition too.

I've been watching this for a while. Some nasty stuff happening, like protesters throwing molotov cocktails at police and police taking people out of hospitals and those people turning up days later in the woods. They need all kinds of prayers right now. :(

One of the worst things is that news networks aren't really covering it. It's at moments like this where I feel a particular dislike to American news. There's legitimate news and issues to be talked about, and we're hearing about Justin Bieber's behavior issues...

I heard on the local news that some of the crowd had weapons because some of the cops were shot. Lots of Ukrainians in my neighbourhood, so the local channels have sent reporters over. The people want to get closer to EU and government wants ties with Russia. I guess they should have elected different people.

The only reason I knew about this (prior to today) is coverage on al jazeera. It has been brewing for quite a while before it gets coverage in major US media outlets.

God help them. It's a real ****storm over there.

Well, they may have elected different people, but socialists have a strange way of counting votes, so it's tough to tell in these cases (just like in in Venezuela and Argentina who are facing similar issues.)  In the last major election the western candidate, Yulia, lost to the Eastern/Russian candidate Viktor by a few percentage points.  Yulia ended up beaten and in jail (very similar to what's happening in Venezuela right now.)

The country is split.  The western half is more ethnic Ukraine and is more Catholic.  The Eastern Half is more Russian/Orthodox.  I think a lot of this split has to do with the fact that Stalin starved out a large percentage of the population in the 1930's (5-15Million people in a country with a current population of 45M) and I think a lot of migration from Russia was encouraged, as it usually was in these cases to dilute concentrations of ethnic groups.

So when you look at an electoral map, the country is split right down the middle, with the western states voting for one party and the eastern states voting for the other.  Kiev is in the western portion of the country, but the eastern group won the election.  This is why you aren't seeing civilians fighting each other, because the civilians in that area are mostly on one side - but in good soviet fashion I'm sure the army and police are were drawn from far away areas to ensure they had no sympathies with the populace.

This has been going on for years but really came to a head when negotiating a recent economic treaty.  They pulled away from the EU at the last minute and went with Russia (who could cut off some of their natural gas supplies if it didn't get it's way), but of course the government had been spending money it didn't have and when they spurned the EU, concerns over their economy caused their debt to fall, interest rates went up, and severe inflation followed.

ICE-NINE - The American sites I follow have been reporting on this in detail since December.

Yeah, but who goes "Oh MSNBC, what a fair and balanced news source"

It's the top story on NPR, Google News, Yahoo news, has a mention on Bing and is all over on the internet.

That said, I don't own a TV and haven't sat in front of one since I went to my fiancee's parent's house for Thanksgiving.

I am sympathetic to your view on this, but blazingstar's as well... If you watch the major news channels and read major newspapers, you are likely to be very poorly informed (which is what they want.)  However, there are plenty of American news sources and it's very easy to be well informed if you so choose.  For instance, I was following this Ukranian stuff via my favorite, very well trafficked sources, as far back as the first week of december, if not earlier.

Do they seriously still make newspapers?  My parents are down to 2 days a week plus Sunday for the paper that serves a good portion of their state.
