Simcha's dirty joke was totally disgusting. Educated people don't talk like that in public. My atheist friends on Facebook don't post like that because, again, higher education. And I loathe Trump. But I also don't think she should have been canned for it - just written up.

Unchristian macro-cultural political divisiveness is invading the Church and tearing Her apart. That's the real lesson here, as I see it.

I don't know about that. I imagine it's about 5% of Catholics read Catholic blogs and newspapers or social media. Maybe 10% take a political approach to the church. The majority could not be bothered.

I mean really if you poll Sunday Masses "what do you think of Mark Shea?" Most will say "who?" And that's the people who actually go to Mass.

Josh, you are aware that Eye of the Tiber is a satire right?

Being that Shea and Fisher had a public platform as representatives of Catholicism (or could be perceived that way), it's not unreasonable that their public, yet unofficial, opinions and statements should conform to a certain level of decency. There are ways of calling out badly conceived logos, political opinions, etc without relying on crass vulgarity.

Right. But these people are merely a symptom of a larger phenomenon.

Does educated=better in all respects? I think educated people can be just as crass, just more high-brow and subliminal about it.

Not defending her. I've made tons of dirty jokes in private. God have mercy on my soul. It must be hard to be sort of put under the microscope of internet quasi-fame.

As such, I do not have the energy to care too much about this. Limited reserves you know?

That may be true.

Simcha's behavior is not the behavior of an elegant woman.  That's certainly not the crime of the century, nor does it make her a bad person, but there you have it.  Criticism and scrutiny can help people reevaluate who they are and who they want to be.  I know I have grown through the professional and personal critiques of those I respect.

Some people don't receive much training at home, so the process of socialization takes on a more painful flavor in the adult world.  Simcha is in the midst of such a storm.  I hope the process is fruitful for Simcha and helps her see more clearly who she is and what her mission will be.

I feels you on limited reserves. I suppose the less educated people  are supposed to be restrained by their piety. It's just these same people defending her crude sex jokes will be the ones moaning "ohhh our culture is soooo coarse. Why isn't sex considered holy. Whine whine whine."

Pretty much this. If it wasn't for Facebook I would have no idea who she is. As I said yesterday I think she's great and I enjoy her pictures and post about her family and all their children. I don't know how her and her husband do it. There family is defitenly in my prayers. Being a great writer I'm sure she will find work soon.

Jesus said love makes up for a multitude of sins. She's a pretty living mom I'm guessing the blood of Christ has her covered. Had for for her behavior being the "behavior of an elegant woman" I choose to give her the benefit of the doubt. You can judge otherwise but to the extent you judge you will be judged. That one always gets me. Ouch.

yeah I'm probably like those people. I'm the worst. Well, I wouldn't defend her, but I certainly wouldn't castigate her because I look in the metaphorical mirror a lot and well . . .  sometimes it's not pretty.

I'm also a Millennial so I'm totes immature sometimez lol. So I snicker at some stupid jokes. But like I said, I'm the worst.

I think people need to stop whining. This is how God made us and has the world. We have strong sex drives and sexual thoughts constanly. Catholics and Christians should strive for purity but I think C.S. Lewis was right when he said sexual sins are the least worse. Jokes are even further down the totem pole. Not saying we shouldn't strive for purity. Defitenly should. Unrepented mortal sexual sins definitely will land you in hell. And if you fall into sexual sin go to Confession ASAP. Hate in your heart for other people and races though is way worse. Good job you go to Mass every week and haven't masturbated or watched porn in 3 months but you don't like black people and you call them the n word. Don't be an ignoramus and think God is pleased. Jesus wasn't a smug prick with the woman caught in adultery when they were foaming at the mouth to stone her to death. I'm guessing he would be even more easy going on a faithful married Catholic mother of 10 who told a stupid sex joke about Donald Trump. Love me some mercy.
