"Sr. Mary Elizabeth of the Visitation, O.P. made profession of vows on March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation"

Not included in the announcement is fact that Sr. Elizabeth had originally entered at the other Dominican monastery in Michigan, which was in Ortonville, and she was known as Sister Mary Joseph. When that monastery was suppressed, Sr. Mary Joseph went to Farmington Hills and took the name Sr. Elizabeth. So her journey has had some quirks in it, but she perseveres.

Dominican Friars of the Province of Saint Joseph

Five of our Dominican brothers were ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Christopher Cardone, O.P., on Saturday, May 25, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.!

In his homily, Archbishop Christopher Cardone, O.P., a Dominican friar of the Province of St. Joseph and archbishop of Honiara in the Solomon Islands, told his newly ordained brothers to: "Be apostles of hope and mercy. Be men of prayer. Be friends of Jesus who bring light and life and the good news of the Gospel to all people, conscious with great certainty that the love of the Lord is the fruit that endures, and the fruit that lasts forever.”

The Trappist Abbey of Our Lady of Guadalupe (in Carlton, OR) clothed a novice, Br. James, in April. Here's a video about 11 minutes long, if you've never seen this kind of thing before.

This post is not about entrances or vows, it's about the closing of a monastery. But it's a related topic. There used to be twelve abbeys of Trappist monks, but they're down to nine now. 1. Our Lady of the Holy Trinity (in Utah) closed in 2017.  2. Assumption Abbey (in Missouri) is still open, but it is now the home to Vietnamese Cistercians. The remaining original Trappists - Cistercians of the Strict Observance - are part of the new community. They worked it out with the Cistercians that they could stay at the monastery until they died.  3. Now St. Benedict Abbey (in Snowmass, Colorado - not far from Aspen) is closing.

 Closing and Sale of St. Benedict Trappist Monastery in Snowmass, CO.

Many know of Snowmass for its great skiing, but it has also been the home of a Trappist monastery. Sadly, with the decreasing number of monks at Snowmass, the monastery will be closing and selling the lands and buildings. After more than 70 years, the monks of St. Benedict’s Monastery are saying goodbye to their land near Aspen and are looking for a buyer willing to pay $150 million for the pristine mountain property.

The St. Benedict’s Monastery listing consists of 3,800 deeded acres, including mountains, meadows, irrigated pastures, mesas and more in what’s known as Old Snowmass, located about half an hour northwest of downtown Aspen in Pitkin County. The monastery at 1012 Monastery Road dates to 1956, when a group of four monks of the Cistercian (otherwise known as Trappist) Order arrived at the property. Since then, the monks have conducted a variety of ranching and farming endeavors in addition to their daily spiritual practices. The monks also sold eggs and cookies and operated a bookstore as well.

The Dominican province of The Holy Name (Western U.S.) ordained 3 friars as priests on May 25. 

And four friars made solemn vows today.

First Vows Celebration for Chicago Schuller

Bro. Chicago Joe Schuller professed First Vows in the Society of Mary on May 18, 2024, at Queen of Apostles Chapel in Beavercreek, OH. Director of Novices Bro. Dennis Bautista and Assistant Director of Novices Fr. Tim Eden presented Bro. Chicago as a suitable candidate for the profession of vows after a period of formation and discernment. His vows were received by Provincial of the Marianist Province of the U.S. Fr. Oscar Vasquez.

“Fr. Jim Tobin was the first Marianist I ever met. His gentle and prayerful presence helped me as I was rediscovering my faith in God and prayer with Mary. Fr. Larry Doersching reminded me that the brothers are normal guys called to do grand things for Mary’s mission. Without his guidance, I would not be here today. And Bro. Mike Sullivan taught me what it means to be a man who builds community. These men of great faith helped cultivate my calling,” said Schuller.

Bro. Chicago will be assigned to the Maryland Ave. Community in St. Louis. He will serve in campus ministry and institutional advancement at St. John Vianney High School.

This announcement if from the diocese of Lansing, Michigan, from around the end of May. The ordinations took place today. The Mass, about 2 hours long, is available on YouTube. No word here on whether any deacons were ordained.

Bishop Barron reports, in one of his YouTube videos, that he ordained three transitional deacons this year for the diocese of Winona-Rochester in Minnesota. And he will ordain three priests in about a week.

Conception Abbey - Benedictine monks in northwest Missouri - received three postulants on July 7th. Brother Mark Nelson professed solemn vows on July 11th. They have another brother in temporary vows, and three novices.

From Mount Angel Abbey and Seminary in Oregon: As of June 28, all four men who were transitional deacons in Mount Angel Seminary’s graduating class of 2024 have been ordained to the priesthood: (from left to right) Fr. Anthony Shumway (ordained June 28 for the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City), Fr. Michael Williams (ordained May 25 for the Archdiocese of Las Vegas), Fr. Maximiliano Muñoz (ordained June 1 for the Archdiocese of Seattle), and Fr. James Ladd (ordained June 22 for the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon).

Update on the Dominican friars of the Central Province (St. Albert the Great): 

1 priest ordained

1 deacon to be ordained (but I haven't seen a date for that yet)

1 friar made solemn vows

7 out of 8 novices made first vows

6 new novices will be admitted in August 8, the feast of St. Dominic

They now have a total of 18 men in first or solemn vows in formation at Aquinas Institute in St. Louis.

Two aspirants at Saint Joseph Abbey in Louisiana recently entered the novitiate. They now have 5 men in first vows and 3 novices.
