They were often separated from the rest of the Church, especially by the Muslims later on, so they could be a different rite, but I think that they were always Catholic.

Maybe I'm wrong...

Pope St. Militiades:

Pope St. Gelasius

Future Pope Arinze:

Anyway, that artwork looks like they were puttin a lil tint into Victor, and Militiades def. looks black in that artwork, Gelasius seems to be white, but Cardinal Arinze is def. black ;)

St.Augustine was from Africa, and so he might of have been black (although no one honestly claims it). The dates on those pictures matter. Europeans would of just generally assumed the pope is white when they drew, I'd think. Simon, the man who carried the cross with JEsus for a while, is also African, and may have been black. Africa played a big role in the early Church. I don't know how many were black skinned however.

God bless,

Mikey

A lot of the trouble with this is that the Romans weren't really racist. They were equal opportunity slave-drivers, so black, white, hispanic...Greek, Jew, Briton...it made no difference to them and they wouldn't bother noting the differences.

Not neccesairly racist. However, the people around them were white. It would be sensible that the Vicar of Christ, a European (mostly) would be consistantly white. THey all didn't have history documents. Thats why I asked for the dates of the pictures.

I'd hate to say it, but I wish there were more of this going on. Since it all isn't debate, just discussion. Howver discussion is like debate, but the debate table has some unhappy mod's with me >.< So I find my debating/discussing skillz (or lack there of) here and the muzik lounge.
Some part of it, maybe, but Ethiopia, I believe, is devoutly Catholic now and the Church always had a strong standing there (because the Muslims keep trying to conquer them but they seem to be protected very well)...
Plus they have the Ark of the covenant. ;) :P

Actually, the real Ark of the Covenant was found during WWII. It's currently kept in a secret US government warehouse. Didn't you see Raiders of the Lost Ark?

:)

I am so confused...what is going on with the Ark? I know the Raiders thing is a joke, but how is it related to Africa/Ethiopia at all?

In reality, there are some rumors that the Ethiopians have the Ark of the Covenant.
