Balthazor Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 Ok how do you guys define a "big family" ? Immediate family only .... based on how many offspring a family produces or adopts.
Guest Aluigi Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 what about goin for the Catholic dozen?
Lil Red Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 okay balthazor, are you pickin' on me? just kiddin', i hope you're not!
IcePrincessKRS Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 (edited) I'd have to say 5 and up.... 4 is still a small family to me. lol Considering that, like Red, I come from a huge family even 5 is rather small in comparison, but I can at least see how 5 seems like alot. ...I actually voted "anything over 5" I guess I should have put "anything over 4"? toledo_jesus Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 we had five and it turned my mom into a lunatic. meh.
Colleen Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 Once there are five kids in your family, then people start saying "wow, look at all those kids." I really don't think five is a lot, though. There are seven kids in my family, and I guess you could say we're a big family.
Andrea348 Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 i think 5 kids and up is a big family. it is only my brother and i so 5 kids seems huge to me.
hopeful1 Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 i voted three, but more for societal reasons than my own. I'm an only child so i think any amounts of sibs are cool. i've even had a psych prof. come out and say if you have more than three children in the house than you are a prime candadate for the nut house! Even i was insulted, but go figure since he was practically the black reincarnation of Freud. there's alot of people on my campus that feel the same way, and when i tell people who came from i think that's cool, they look at me like i'm crazy. maybe i am-that's why i hope God blesses me with at least four or five.
Balthazor Posted November 20, 2004 Author Posted November 20, 2004
okay balthazor, are you pickin' on me? just kiddin', i hope you're not!
no...remember you thwarted my plans for a alien eyes anonomous ! Cursed Kids! No I am not picking on you. But you did get me to wondering what do people consider a large family. Usually your perception of "large" comes from how big your family is. If you only had two siblings then a houshold with more than three kids is huge to you. If you had four siblings then five kids is the line for "large". Someone who grew up in a household with nine kids, like my neighbors look at families with only five children as being medium. I find it kind of funny, just goes to show where you stand depends on where you sit ... there are only four kids in my family, a nice sized family right? Not too big not too little. I wouldn't call it small. I don';t think of my family as especially large.... I think of it as absolutley perfect. But then I don't think of this as my whole family. Add to the mix. Two brother-in laws, a slightly hyper border collie, three bearded dragons, any kittens that have recently been born and any friend or family that are over for dinner on any given sunday night.... that is my real and complete family. Actually it is more like a small zoo than a medium sized family. Oh what fun!
littleflower+JMJ Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 okay theres 6 in mine and we are a SMALL family...anything less just doesn't cut it lol no contest def 7+
Agree about the # that is large according to society. Any number above the minimum replacement level of 2 is considred odd. When I tell people I'm one of 5 kids, or that I have an uncle in France w/ 10 children, they either look at me like my parents and uncle are nuts, or actually say that they are crazy. This is widespread in the culture. other cousins who are married and other uncles and aunts say that that's too many One cousin drives me nuts because she says twoa re plenty and other worse things, IN FRONT OF HER KIDS
littleflower+JMJ Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 yeah in one of my classes (at nite w/ older peeps) i said i wanted a big family they all laughed and jeered at me saying "yeah right honey your going to stop at one--just watch" and that im crazy, nuts and dont know what im talknig about.... apparently they all agreed that one was "enough" grrr!!
XIX Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 By society's standards, 2.2 kids is big. I'd like to be able to support 5, by the Grace of God.

IcePrincessKRS Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 How the heck does one go about having 2.2 kids anyway? I'd be interested to know... I might stop once I have that extra .2 (I'm KIDDING) I'm one of 12 and the people who say negative things like "People who have more than 2 should be dragged out into the street and shot" make me want to kick them in the rear. (My aunt's father in law actually said that to her when she was pregnant with her 3rd, right BEFORE they were about to announce their news!) They are so IGNORANT. Even when they whine about not being able to afford more than one or two kids... GIVE ME A BREAK! If my parents could manage raising 12 kids (and they are by no means rich) the average family can afford more than 2 or 3.

Balthazor Posted November 20, 2004 Author Posted November 20, 2004 Honestly I thnk that people feel they need a heck of a lot more "stuff" to survive than they really do....they want to have an SUV and a Boat as before they had a family....so they compromise they have one kid and a boat. And "sacrifice" and don't buy the SUV. I don't know about you but I think a kid is one hell of a lot more fun than a boat.
