studies have shown that light to moderate cigar and pipe use (that's 1-2 cigars or 1-4 pipes a day) very clearly puts the user at less risk for types of cancers. This is as compared to cigarettes.
The studies found that cancer occurred later in life in pipe and cigar smokers, with less frequency.
Here is the problem that we really need to address: People are inactive. In countries where people smoke a lot but are active, they live longer than we do. Japanese have on average 10 more years to their lifespan than we do, and they smoke a whole lot.
Inhalation of smoke appears to have something to do with it as well...My suggestion is that if you are underage quit smoking, but when you can smoke go for a pipe or nice cigar once a day. As a HOBBY!

[quote name='Sojourner' date='Dec 9 2004, 04:49 PM'] However, smoking can be a pleasant experience ... I quite enjoy it myself. I specifically love the smell of pipe smoke, but I also from time to time enjoy a cigarette. In moderation ... not such a big deal.

There are many ways to experience pleasure I prefer not to use my life as the betting piece though.....but thats just my opinion
I am also not gonna try and justify just how much something is hurting me or just how illegal something is.

Even if you would like to tell yourself you won't get cancer and nothing will happen to you, the law is the law it's there for a reasons..

Even pipe smoking makes health and life insurance go up, even from the K of C (In Phazzan's case the Knights of the Southern Cross).

At the very least, for the sake of my future family, I can not afford to smoke.

smoking is utterly disgusting. it makes you look ugly and plus everytime you smoke a ciggarate it takes 7 minutes off your life. Think about that. I think it should be a sin because thou shalt not kill is one of the 10 commandments and smoking is a slow but sure way of killing yourself.

You should of course obey the law. I, however, am older than 18, and can enjoy smoking in moderation whenever I so chose.

People who don't smoke die too.

a joke a joke to lighten the mood

A Jesuit was in his office smoking a cigar as he prayed the Divine Office. His secretary noticed him smoking and asked if that was permissible. The Jesuit responded "I don't know, I've never asked. I'll ask my superior tomorrow." The next day, he reported to his secretary that "I asked my superior, and he said, 'Of course it's okay to pray while you smoke!'"

yeah and people who dont commit suicide die too.

Smoking is not hard to quit. I've done it a thousand times.

All this talk about smoke, I think I'll go have a nice bowl of Dunhill Nightcap.

everyone dies.

But not everyone really lives.

Seriously, let's be less serious here. People smoke, it's not sinful in and of itself to smoke tobacco, as long as it doesn't become an addiction. With what we know now it's perfectly reasonable to refrain from smoking. However, it is also still acceptable to smoke in moderation.

YES!
I'm thinking about picking up an ounce of 965 to give it a whirl. Currently smoking a Peaches and Cream blend that's very light with a good hint of Italian peaches...

Are you attempting to equate suicide (the certain ending of your own life: always mortally sinful for those who meet the requirements (full consent of the will, etc. etc.) with smoking (no certainty whatsoever, anymore than you have when you eat fast food every day: never a mortal sin, at least not in itself and under normal circumstances)?

Surely not.

do you know people who have died from smoking? it's not a cool thing

I have some 965 here as well. That does sound good. I think I'll save the pipe for later and just have a Lucky Strike. Decisions, Decisions.

The cost is immoderate, both for the tabacco and the life insurance.

Ever wonder why your life insurance goes up?

I know that I can buy an ounce of pipe tobacco for $1.75, and that will last me far longer than any 7 packs of cigarettes. In fact, I daresay that I can keep it going for a month or more.
