scrungy
I would much rather fall in love with someone who is poor, who isn't very good-looking, who isn't much of an athlete, who isn't very smart, but who is honest, trustworthy, loving, and caring, than fall in love with and marry someone who is rich, incredibly handsome, athletic, incredibly intelligent, but dishonest, untrustworthy, selfish, and neglectful.
I don't dispute that, however, if you had the choice between someone who is unemployed, poor, not very good looking, overweight, not smart but who is honest, trustworthy, loving and caring, and someone who is career orientated, successful, intelligent, handsome yet also caring, trustworthy, honest etc etc etc, who would you choose? Logic says the second bloke, not only because he would make a good husband, but also because he would be able to provide better for you and your children. Your kids would most likely be well educated, successful, handsome, intelligent etc as opposed to bloke A's kids, who would most likely lack these qualities. We are all superficial in one way or another, yet most of us don't realise it.
I would much rather spend the rest of my life poor and happy, knowing that I am loved and cherished for who I am, than be well-provided for and absolutely miserable.
I agree. I don't think attraction and falling in love are exact sciences. And I don't claim to be an expert on this subject, of course. I don't know, I'm just a nineteen-year-old kid. Looks and success may attract at first, but when people truly fall in love, they fall in love with each other entirely: body and soul. Appearance is passing and success may come and go. True love is much more than initial attraction! Maybe it happens that you aren't attracted to someone initially, but when you get to know them better, you might gradually see the beauty within them and fall in love with them. I think of my grandparents. As they got older, they didn't look the same as they did when they got married. They didn't have much in terms of wealth, either. But after over fifty years, they were still so much in love. Yes, people can be superficial. But not everyone is.
jp2_rules
I want to be my future wife's best friend, who hangs out with her and wants to be in every part of her life and wants her in every part of my life, who helps her with everything she needs and most importantly--is constantly pouring himself out to her in every little deed of the day. Within the sacrament of marriage, that pouring out of love to her is a pouring out of love to Christ as well. It's not my "angle"...it's who I am and who I want to be...in the order of St. Joseph.
Dude, I don't know how I ended up reading up to your thread. But, for whatever reason I did. That's really awesome!! I think that for us guys, it's sooo easy to get stuck in the trap of getting a woman's attention, and getting her to like us. Then, after she's in the realationship, she finds out what he's really like--which isn't usually good. I think you put it very well. Our goal as a married couple is supposed to be to help our spouse get to Heaven--no easy chore ;-) I'm only a freshman in college, so I still have time before I have to worry about that.... But is exciting to think that the woman I marry will be my best friend!! I can't wait to find out who she is!!! Go St. Joseph!!!
