Does anyone practice Martial Arts? How long? What style? What's your favorite weapon and/or part of Martial Arts to practice?

I took Kuk Sool Won, a Traditional Korean style, for three years and a blend of TKD/Karate for six months. I like practicing staff and forms... ours were similar to Kung Fu with sort of a TKD influence. Oh, btw, I like Kuk Sool much better than TKD and Karate :)

Wado Ryu Karate for about 9 years. A REAL form of Karate, unlike other forms where you can get to black belt level within 2 years, eugh.

Wado-Ryu Karate is a Japanese martial art founded by Hironori Ohtsuka Sensei in 1934. Ohtsuka Sensei developed Wado-Ryu after studying the Samurai martial art of Jiu-jitsu, and Shotokan (another style of Karate). This combination, according to Ohstuka Sensei, is a softer, more natural means of self-protection.

The full name of the style is Wado-Ryu Karate-Do. The term Wado-Ryu means "way of peace" or "way of harmony", indicating Ohtsuka Sensei's original intention to use training in Wado-Ryu as a means of solving problems in a non-violent way. Karate-Do means "way of the empty hand", as Karate is, for the most part, studied without the use of weapons.

I am a black belt and instructor, i have been teaching for about 3 years. my black belt grading lasted about 3 hours and then we had to pass a written examination ^_^

what annoys me is that some martial arts have become more of a sport. also, i hate martial arts where u can achieve black belt in a short period of time

10 years of Medieval and Elizabethan Western martial arts, I perfer the long sword to anything else-- Some training in various Eastern martial arts but they always have to go and be silly, the first time I have to hear about Chi when it is obviously something like umm leverage I tend to lose interest in them.

every one seems to have the notion that Medieval combat is A crude and B all about weapons, there is a great deal of unarmed combat that we still have records from, particularly wrestling. I would match a man who had mastered Tallhoffers wrestling and Peter's wrestling agianst anyone anywhere.

I ahve been playing mah jhong for 3 years now.....does that count?

Definitely. And you're right on the ki/chi issue. It is just a matter of skeletal alignment and leverage and such. I did Hsing-I one of the 3 internal chinese martial arts. There are more than 3 of course but Tai Chi, Hsing-I, and Ba Gua are the three most important chinese internal martial arts. Their power generation mechanisms are the best I've ever seen.

The funny thing about it though is that it has everything to do with proper posture and movement and nothing to do with a magical energy force. In fact, German longsword and Hsing-I were made for each other. German Longsword and Two-handed jian seem to me to be almost the same thing. Don't know why the Chinese felt the need to explain it in a way that causes so many misunderstandings...

All right! Prayers for my new endeavor, por favor...
I've been asked by the Mother Vicar of the Order I'm joining next month to teach some of the sisters what I know. I started during my aspirancy in October, but we have a long way to go and I really need to get a refresher myself. She wants me to teach the sisters for self-defense :)

*prayers*

I took Kenpo for almost 14 years.

At first it was IKKA, International Kenpo Karate Assosiation
Then later after the death of the founder of Kenpo, Ed Parker, his closest mentor Paul Mills formed the AKKI, American Kenpo Karate International.

One of the best things I did in my life. If you asked me what it was I would say it teaches you just about anything and everything with great confidence and energy towards self-defence techniques. If you want to know more shoot me a message.

God Bless
